To me it sounds like they should instead use categories as hints for how to weigh ratings of different users for different categories. I definitely don't want my feed to be filled with silly comedies all of a sudden.

It's a useful feature that necessitates slower response to taps. One has to pick one or the other. If you write your css to support dynamic type (in the case of iOS); zooming becomes less valuable as an accessibility feature.

Console games use interpreted (not even JITed) Lua quite a lot for the areas where iteration time is of most importance. As the parent said, wiser engineers just choose the best tech for the task.
