Well, while an emulator can be anything, it can also be very little. A userspace emulator is one that just loads an ELF binary, provides hooks for system calls, and then just simulates instructions from there. You don't technically nee

The base RISC-V ISA is pretty simple, so you could learn it by writing your own emulator. I ended up writing one, and now I'm using it for scripting in game engines :) There are very few instructions for RV32I and RV64I - and you don&#

OK. That is interesting. Every so often something incredible comes out, like this. I assume that this only relieves certain types of sources of Tinnitus, as I know there are several causes. So, the question is, what percentage of people can

I hope it's over-engineered. That leaves room for experimentation, takes care of random heat-related issues. I really like how easy it is to take the fan out. I bet we can get special fans soon after release.

Is there a std-variant for rv64g? And if not, how easy is it to setup for rv64gc? I have an emulator with a known rv64gc bug, and it's faster to emulate uncompressed instructions (until I start translating them, I guess). Also, what la

Technically upscaling with machine learning can be amazing, and it's what most real-time renderers use nowadays. You won't be able to tell, and it can even add detail if the network is good. I'm not an expert though, but I su

I am watching Hikaru Nakamura on stream every day, and he does say that 960 will grow, and classic will not. I just take his word for it. I don't have anything against classic, and as you say, I will probably be playing it forever myse

Living further north seems to be a good idea, however there is the real danger of the weakening gulf stream. There's theories on what will happen, such as northern europe becoming colder: https://blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2

960 chess is hugely popular now, and is even being used in tournaments - one of them being today. The only thing that is going out of style in chess is classic chess. Stalemates happen less in 960.

Funny, I actually have some fib benchmarks for my RISC-V emulator! It uses fib(40), but I added one for 20. Interestingly, that is the one benchmark that LuaJIT crushes my emulator in, so I'm still working on beating it, but i don'

I guess I haven't. I also don't write many tests, but I do write a testsuite when I get really stuck with something. For example, I couldn't trust my floating-point implementation in a RISC-V emulator, so I wrote a program th

Hey, just woke up. I don't see anything wrong here, so I think I will second the other commenter. I wonder if the VMs are over-subscribed? Is there any way to tell or would that be a business secret? I also think we should consider how

I live on an island on the coast of Norway. It's kinda weird with all the bird life and postcard-like views. Also, there is a family of grouses (is this the right word?) living in the bushes outside! A little bit lonely, too. But, the

I'm just doing regular benchmarking here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aqr3qxYHlh9rgfVUKdE7Y9oYo5pOVQ?e=2GWdJU But as you can see, it's not much CPU at 450'000 reqs/sec, and the response time is just fine, a

I've worked on unikernels for several years, and I've recently had some insight into low-overhead emulation. Depending on your use-case it's possible that a tiny emulator will be less overhead than everything else for the co

That's a good point. Patents tend to be applied in several geographical areas though (although I'm no expert), but I suppose there's always a possibility that there are patents that only apply in the UK now.

If you disable the compressed extension then you do get enforced alignment. So, for example RV32I, RV64I both 32-bit alignment. I just ran a small linux program I had for RV32GC and I found 2 places where an instruction crossed a page borde

I doubt it because they can cross page-borders which is a seriously annoying "feature" in the compressed extension. Also 32-bit instructions can cross the page border too!

That might be, but the C++ array append is bounds-checked which makes it half as fast as it could be too. It would be 16ns if there is no checking. So, you are right but I am trying to do a balanced approach here. These benchmarks are made

Nice work, man. I was doing microbenchmarks where I among other things measure the 90ns (JIT) and 120ns (Regular) function call overhead of Lua. My benchmarks was compared to my own scripting backend where the call overhead is 4ns, and it a
