Afaik, Nginx used this hack for aio on FreeBSD many years. It is superrior to aio on Linux. That is why Netflix used nginx together with FreeBSD. Now nginx could use threads for file io, and linux file performance became ok as well.

C was not "high level" system language at the beginning. It was almost pretty skin for assembler.

fork is not friendly to concurrent programming: fibers/threads/callbacks - what should you do with all this after fork? While it is possible to create and manage some rules, it is simpler not to fork at all.

For example, if you want to execute "native" code in a restricted environment. WebAssembly is quite fast when (jit)compiled. Therefore, it's very tempting to use it to embed extension logic.

May be it would be better to reimplement protocol, like postgres-pr does but using java ? Protocol is rather simple, and postgres-pr could be used as a reference (it implements meaningfull subset).
