The climate doesn't care which sector emits the CO2. For a societal analysis, focusing on only electricity makes very little sense.

The french energy mix is around 50% fossil fuels [1]. The reduction in CO2 emissions over the last two decades were only due to better efficiency (lower energy usage) and renewables. [1] https://www.iea.org/countries/fr

Small reactors have lost against GW-class facilities around 60 years ago. This is why they were no longer built. I find it strange to believe that the economy of scale somehow doesn't apply to nuclear power plants, even though history

The measurement was already confirmed by a different group: https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.12311 This is important since impurities in the crystals used lead to all kinds of fluorescence that could be mistaken for a signal

The accuracy of the hydrogen 1S-2S measurement was mainly limited by the second-order Doppler shift of the moving atoms (and to a lesser degree the AC Stark shift of the excitation laser and the 2S-4P quench light). The comparison between t

The inputs of the formulas for the hydrogen energy levels in the paper are: The Rydberg constant, the fine structure constant, the electron-to-proton mass ratio, the electron-to-muon mass ratio, the Compton wavelength of the electron, and s

I believe you might be confusing the QED calculations of hydrogen with those of the electron g-factor. Just have a look into the paper I linked (section VII). Most of the QED corrections are given analytically , no computers involved at al

This is completely wrong. My laptop can solve the equations in fractions of a second. I believe that with some optimizations it should be trivial to do the calculations on a 1960s mainframe.

We can absolutely simulate the hydrogen atom. This paper lists the equations and fundamental constants that allow calculating the hydrogen energy levels with around 13 digits of accuracy: https://journals.aps.org/rmp/ab

Yes, this is a huge effect relative to the stability and accuracy of modern atomic clocks. Even a few hundred meters of elevation difference on earth is easily visible in clock comparisons and has to be accounted for.

This is not what happens. The influence of the different gravitational acceleration on the moon compared to the earth is completely negligible for atomic clocks. However, the surface of the earth is at a lower gravitational potential than t

The core of modern oscilloscopes is often an FPGA that reads out the analog-to-digital converters at ~gigasamples/s and dumps the result into a RAM chip. Some companies (Keysight, Siglent) use custom chips for this, but FPGAs are very

I still don't understand why an effective 5% "discount" (not counting the effort to actually invest the money) makes the $5000 pill any easier to swallow. The money is still gone.

I just don't get this obsession with taking on debt. "Financing" doesn't make a product any cheaper. If you can't pay $5000 now, you probably shouldn't buy the product.

I find Pgfplots quite hacky since TeX is really not made for handling data (it doesn't even support floating-point arithmetic). A much cleaner solution is to enable LaTeX text rendering in Matplotlib ( https://matplotlib.org&
