Voting systems have a number of key requirements. To prevent bribes or coercion, the vote has to be anonymous and the voter must not be able to prove his vote. On the other hand, it must be possible to verify that each cast vote has been co

No, the mass of the object that has a force applied to it has absolutely nothing to do with the torque. Here is how Wikipedia defines the torque caused by a force acting on an object with a rotation axis: Torque is the product of the magnit

This module is basically just a 3G baseband chip on a board. By your definition, no circuit that contains a chip would be open source.

The difference is that electronic voting is a bad idea in principle, regardless of the implementation. Fully self-driving cars might actually be possible, but probably not with current software and hardware.

I don't see how showing "Still using Firefox?" can be seen as anything but a targeted anti-Firefox ad. The title is completely accurate.

Systemd can be configured to kill all processes belonging to a user when he or she closes the last login shell. Some people had this enabled on their servers and were surprised that their tmux/screen sessions kept disappearing.

They have to remove the glued-in screen to get at the battery. Much more difficult than it should be and with the risk of compromising the waterproofing. I don't buy the argument that this is somehow required for engineering reasons. W

This was 60 years ago in a desperate race with the Soviets and with an expendable flight crew. Hardly comparable conditions to commercial aviation.

Half the population has a phone with a reasonably competent low-light camera in their pocket and yet nobody took a good video of a drone that "didn’t move all night, just hovered over the town"? Bullshit.

I don't see any objective reason for choosing 70 mm analog over 4K digital. Sure, the resolution of 70 mm is higher, but does it really make a difference? A lot of digital cinema is "only" 2048×1080 and you usually don't

After 70 years of research, LWRs are still the only reactor type that has ever been anywhere near economically viable. Many other approaches, such as Thorium pebble-bed reactors and sodium-cooled fast breeders have been tried and abandoned.

Thorium reactors are breeders. Molten salt reactors share many issues related to the corrosive radioactive colant with fast breeder reactors that are discussed in the article.

The main reason is that one has to fiddle with the code a lot and re-running the whole thing is much too slow. A common example is that a huge text file containing experimental data gets parsed in the beginning. Then you have to explore the

It is completely obvious that renewables require significantly more storage capacity than other power sources. However, a lot of experts seem to believe that this is not nearly as big of an issue as you are implying. As for wind energy, you
