You are probably thinking of galaxy rotation curves which do not agree with theoretical predictions that assume only visible matter exists. Gravity not following the ISL at large scales would indeed be a possible explanation for this. Howev

I really hope that this stupid "short seller conspiracy" meme is going away soon. According to the article Apple does end-to-end encryption for video conferences. Also other providers are not lying about it like zoom does.

Video conferences via WebRTC usually have a central server that distributes all the video streams and are therefore not end-to-end encrypted.

I think that a reddit/hn-style voting system is the absolute opposite of what you want to have for scientific publications. These systems tend to enforce a strong hive-mind, where only the most popular posts and opinions are visible an

Probably the false-positive rate of antibody tests would be a big problem as long as only a small fraction of the population is infected. From what I've read, the specificity of such tests is way worse than for RNA-based tests.

The 2017/18 flu season was the worst in decades. Here in Germany it increased overall mortality rate by about 40% in March 2018. Italy has a similar increase due to COVID-19 right now, but in the most affected regions mortality is a lo

It is impossible to calculate this from just the medians. John Ioannidis estimates a range of 0.025% to 0.625% by comparing the age distributions. However, there is so little data that any small systematic error could completely invalidate

One problem with this is that in the early stages of the spread you would have to run hundreds of thousands of tests daily in order to get statistically significant results. This is clearly impossible with the available lab infrastructure.

It is also worth noting that the fatality rate of cases that get artificial ventilation is about 50 % even in ideal conditions. While it can save a lot of lifes, keeping the total number of cases low is still absolutely crucial.

Amazing piece of technology. Its successor, the 5071A (now made by microsemi) is still the most common primary frequency standard. HP used to be such a great company. Now they make crappy consumer printers and network cables with DRM chips.

Voting by mail shares many systemic issues with online voting, such as lack of anonymity (an attacker could open your letter or you could show the ballot to someone) and verifiability (you have no idea if your letter made it to the count).
