We need an alternative to the enshittified services, not to the Internet.

This has nothing to do with enshittification.

You're mixing things up. Thousands of servers (i.e., federation) are private servers, not Big Tech servers. (Probably with some exceptions.) You can't easily sue or DDoS them all. You may not even be able to find them all. The B

If your true friend can't use Instagram for any reason, you'll surely join their network, won't you?

Indeed: Google collects 20 times more telemetry from Android devices than Apple from iOS (therecord.media) [but Apple still collects a lot!] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26639261

Yes, it does. It's much harder to target thousands of servers instead of a single huge one.

I do use this phone as a daily driver. I can run Android apps with Waydroid, and I can run any GNU/Linux desktop app. > Also, purism is American. So what? The device runs an FSF-endorsed distro, and they even provide its schematics.

You can have the full access to your phone. See: Librem 5.

I didn't succeed in moving entire friend groups. But I did move some friends, which is good enough.

> this is the only connection left with lots of my friends now as we are scattered around the world Time to suggest them to join Mastodon and Pixelfed? Relying on a foreign, for-profit megacorp is a bad way to keep contact with friends.

You have to choose a server that you trust. In centralized systems, you have no choice at all. If you can't find a trusted server, you can set up your own, ask a friend to do it for you, or pay someone to do this job. You are not bound

You can run a bank app with Waydroid, and you can (and should) switch from a bank that forces you into the duopoly. I did. Many banks have an alternative authentication device, too.

What are you talking about? Which server? They are federated systems with many independent servers.
