Part of the problem I think is that when you got tagged, it showed up in your stream. If it were federated, their server could say "hey, I tagged you in this picture", and then it wouldn't show up in your stream, or when you look for photos

That's not really true though. When you buy things on walmart.com, you can pick them up at the store. The same thing with the sears catalogue. In theory, because they are already submitting sales tax to the state, it's no additional burden

That's the avenue I came up with as well. I hated running out of hard disk space, and the HD PVR kept overheating and not recording stuff. Of course, I kept the htpc, but moved to netflix and cough .

The problem isn't that it can't compete on a level price playing field, but a level tax-reporting playing field. When you live in Sacramento, and go to San Francisco and buy a sandwich, you pay the local sales tax. A store has a physical

The problem with your analogy is that once spent, your bits become worthless. If for instance, I made a song and then you pirated it and then I no longer had it on my hard drive any more, then that is what's happening here. Similarly, my pa

I was shocked that it was MG was writing it, since I scrolled up to the top about halfway through the article to check out who wrote it. There weren't any rabid apple fanboy comments, and it was somewhat well-written, and usually it's Micha

He is not saying what you think he's saying for #1. He's saying that if in 10 years or whatever, 1 bitcoin is worth $2M, why would you ever spend your 1 bitcoin now when it's going to be worth so much money in the future. This means people

Why are "alternative currencies" illegal under US law? AFAIK the only thing that's illegal is refusing to accept US$ as payment if you accept something else. For example, people can spend foreign money (GBP, Euros, etc) inside the non-inter

Were the patents issued for using that form of electricity, or rather for the contraption built to harness that electricity?

Well there is a fundamental difference between the two. The light bulb was invented, was lightning was discovered. It already existed, and was merely discovered. It was discovered that there are are infinite primes. It was discovered that f

The problem is that math isn't "invented", it's "discovered". Hence why it's traditionally been un-patentable.

I don't understand why the author needs to bring FOSS into the discussion. The same argument could be made for regular patents in as much as someone could invent something like a way to make water potable, and then a charity wants to mass-p

You can take slightly larger leap, and program the Arduino processor directly, without using the Arduino abstraction. It's the next logical leap, as "industry" doesn't really use the Arduino platform.

I work at a non-"startup" company, and I really appreciate the t-shirts my company gives us. When I joined the company, I got a plain white one, and every so often they sell the "generic" shirts for fairly cheap (at cost I believe). At some

What I usually do is have multiple repos, one per machine I'm working on. This way they are write-once, read-many so you don't ever have dropbox merge conflicts. It's a bit more overhead, but safer. It's even "easier" to get the semantics r

I've always wondered why they continue building submarines instead of ROVs. I'm a little bit biased as I work for an ROV company, but it seems silly that you'd go down so deep (somewhat "dangerously" as well) for the experience of breathing

Same thing with Trillian, which I use. I won't be using a standalone Twitter client for windows, so I guess it just means I won't be using Twitter if they remove the API access for them.

There may be a 160 byte block of space in the normal traffic your phone makes to the towers in order to let it know where you are. Maybe they should look into using that for something like this.

Well the odds are somewhat high that if one has a patent on something in h.264, they would have joined the consortium and gotten royalties for it already. Plus there are a lot of patents that already exist in the patent pool that MPEG-LA ha

I agree that it's a bad graphic. I think this is what the numbers mean: On map: percentage of people in that country that use IE6. If there were 300 million people in USA, and 30 million people use IE6 means 10% would show up for USA On rin

I think you gravely misunderstand the patent system. When you can get a patent on drawing a line onto the screen ( http://www.google.com/patents/about?id=KYwhAAAAEBAJ&dq=r... ), it means that anything in your codec might be patented b
