In the paper it is mentioned that the LLMs predicting the previous token are indeed pre-trained in this way, so it is not true that the difference is obvious.

I don't think any AI or AI safety researcher imagines that using anything like "treating others as you would want to be treated by them" will solve the alignment problem

No I think the point that was being made is that the "average person" idea is not that great if you have huge variance. If I have a uniform distribution from 0 to 1, average is '0.5', but its just as likely to get 0. or
