> Who will watch the watchmen? I think the answer is: everyone, at least theoretically. Edit histories on Wikipedia are completely open, and anyone can edit (almost?) any article.

The point is basically no one else has politicised this to the extent the US did. Pointing to how different countries solve it differently is missing the point completely.

Yes I wish people are more cognisant of potentially confusing and misleading writing and proactively write clearer language.

This is correct. On top of that, the failure modes of AI system are unpredictable and incomprehensible. Present day AI systems can fail on/be fooled by inputs in surprising ways that no humans would.

I don’t think this is as profound as you made out to be. Most complex systems are incomprehensible to the majority of population anyway, so from a practical standpoint AI is no different. There’s also no single theory for how the financial

I second this. The pompous holier-than-thou I-know-better attitude some members of the computer security community has always rubbed me the wrong way. This behaviour of complaining is a manifestation of the typical “putting down” and dism

Yes, since there’s nothing more powerful than religious belief, how do you teach a population to avoid doing a particular risky thing? By codifying it as an iron-clad zero-tolerance word-of-god holy decree, so much so that adherents aren’t

47% is still substantially lower than housing owned by the rich. On top of that, the housing owned by the lower class tends to be lower value. They probably “own” their house through big mortgages, which is just another form of rent paid to

Crypto (specifically USDT) is already in use by some commodities traders for international settlement (I used to work in this space). So I wouldn’t be surprised at all if terrorists do the same.

The issue is you need to explicitly recover each goroutine just so a nil dereference or a panic from a library you have no control over doesn’t bring down the whole application. Maybe this is the way it has to be, but it is a little known f

Do you have a more substantive reply to the user you’re replying to? These are genuine observations/experiences. If you disagree or think they are misguided, then point them out.

Regardless of whether the developers of PeerTube intend for their work to be widely used and successful, it doesn’t refute the argument that “if this software/platform/service is to be successful and widely used, it needs more mar

I’m not sure about Go being full of footguns, but for one, a panic in any goroutine forcibly terminates the entire application.

It’s hard to know few decades ago which companies to put substantial money in. It’s hard to know which companies will perform in the next few decades. And if you are wrong in your bets, there goes a few decades of your life and you can’t

This is the same predictable reply as the naysayers at the launch of DropBox. Both of us know that expecting people to set up FTP is a complete nonstarter. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8863

Agreed. A world where Mozilla ceases to exist due to lack of funding is arguably worse than the current state.

Perhaps this is telling us that the financial losses and inefficiencies incurred from these supposedly error-prone processes are small enough (relative speaking at least most of the time) that there’s no real consequences to the stakeholder

Everyone values different things and has different requirements, so I’m glad your laptop works out for you. I’m just cautioning against an emphasis on performance: even if the laptop is plugged in, other design considerations will dictate a

The performance alone says nothing. What about the battery life, size, weight, temperature, fan noise, and quality of the touchpad? These are important trade offs in any laptop.

I think we can start with the work of Gary Stevenson. He made a few points on why inequality is bad. When there’s massive inequality in the system, the super rich will compete with you for resources. Resources can include: - Housing, of whi

Two points here: 1. Gary’s arguments for taxing the rich aren’t about taxing income. It’s about taxing wealth . 2. By his argument, most of the wealth are immovable: the rich disproportionately owns actual, physical real estates, and stock
