One thing that jumps out at me, being from NYC, is the complete lack of anything in Central Park. There's this widespread belief that you can't go in the park after dark, since it's /so dangerous/, but apparently statistically that's not t

It's 5:30am on the East Coast and I've just been up all night, watching with rapt attention Twitter feeds since 11pm. The media's been inexplicably out of it (see #CNNfail, but CNN isn't the only one), but Twitter's been amazing to watch.

I can do go for that for RoR; but Napster was a much bigger leap in its time than we give it credit for now, and the same for Bram/BT. The BitTorrent protocol was well done, even once P2P was far from an obscure idea.

> And they only took off because Linus is not a total dick Have you ever seen Linus on usenet? I'd argue that his Real Programmer protective stance towards Linux was more helpful to it taking off than being a really Nice Guy.

Wow that's misleading linkbait. The actual article describes it as philanthropy targeted at availability of contraception, female education, and higher standards of living world wide, things that are correlated with lower, more sensible, b

The "clock speed" of a neuron is actually closer to 50ms-100ms (only about 10-20Hz for meaningful purposes) -- but you have about 100 billion of them, and they're all working in parallel. The brain's building blocks are really slow relativ
