Thats because someone typed in that username with a trailing space character ("mtgx ") and it made a new entry for that username int eh database. Nothing a little .strip won't fix...

Since HN doesn't publish a userlist, this site gets its data by crawling the "latest posts" HNSearch API every ten minutes. That 11,000 users includes all users who have made a post on HN since January 25th. Thats right, 11,000 unique users

You can implement an immutable database system with SQL databases today. For instance, just design your application to only add new records, and not to issue any updates. Why is an entirely new database system needed?

H didn't imply that its dead, he was implying that its dying. Slowly. In my opinion, 30 years from now C will no longer be in the top 10. It'll still be around though, because there will still be uses for it. Just not as many uses as before

Rename "hellban" to "probation". When on probation, your posts get hidden. If three of your posts get upvoted while on probation, you are restored to normal status. If three of your posts get downvoted while on probation, you get banned per
