IIRC PC power supplies are most efficient at around 80% utilization. Below that they are not able to hit their "rates" efficiencies.

It's price segmentation. If you NEED the slight increase in power (and specific features like float8 at full speed) then NVIDIA charges significantly more for that. Gamers are more price sensitive than ML developers.

What is the current sentiment on the pandemic like in California, given that they've been on lockdown for the longest? Are people getting antsy? Is there an "index" that measures sentiment across different states?

The "biodegradable" plastics can still take a _long_ time to decompose if not put into a city compost collection bin. The city has to "biodegrade" them via a method different from what you would do at home (throw it into

There is an element of truth to this. I agree -- people are out of touch with the world around them, on average. But it's a double-edged sword. The abstraction has been hugely beneficial to society as a whole. Specialization lets us cr

It is a hard problem. Historically, people often grew plants in heterogeneous environments because they grew their own crops. Even if it wasn't _all_ of their food, it was still a subset of their food. But it was very labor intensive.

I think there are a few benefits that they're (poorly) trying to articulate in the article, so I'll fill in with my own (biased) thoughts. :) - Growing trees in rows alongside feed crops (like hay) is more profitable for farmers b

I think that "mixed" farming like this article describes has a huge potential for automation by the software field. Monocrops[0] (homogeneous fields of crops like corn or soybeans) are easy to build automated robots for. We'v

This starts to blur the line in my head between the low-level system concepts that your compiler/OS has to think about and the concepts you have to think about for distributes systems. With the hardware systems and interconnects today,

Make sure you soak beans before you put them in the slow cooker. Or else you're poisoning yourself! Uncooked beans contain bad proteins because they are legumes. You either need high heat or to do soak them and pour off the water. htt

I bet somebody could make a business refurbishing those old 5K iMacs into usable monitors. Either yank the panel into a new case w/ a custom board to drive the display, or hack an input into the existing system (maybe with a minimal bo

Could that actually effect the life of the chip though? Annoying to have your system crash, but that isn't a longevity problem by itself. Does a stray ray cause the gate to wear prematurely?

You’re right that PCI-E bandwidth is the bottleneck for CPU-to-GPU communication. Game devs often have to think in “number of draw calls” being sent (especially before DX12/Vulcan). You can easily saturate that channel. I believe what
