I fully agree that we need more women in technical fields and that the social stigmas that work against this should be slowly eliminated. (Slowly because it can't happen instantaneously, not because slower is better.) However, I'm going to

I've been using the beta channel since FF6 (maybe) and, as you said, it's been quite reliable. It's fun because you feel like you're somehow an insider and privileged because you get features (that no one but you would care about!) earlier

Agreed - it's great to see what people have been contributing to and working on - but the number of commits and days in a row with a commit seem like meaningless data.

I thought their article on the NRA was pretty poorly done too today: http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/21/the-nra-blames-video-games-... Among many issues I had with the article, they link to a guy making a joke tweet saying: "Sorry guys, bu

I have Harley Hahn's Unix book (2009 edition I think). In it, he describes some of the reasons Linux grew so quickly. One of them is that "Linus has a pleasing personality... in person or online, Linus pretty much gets along with everyone

When I posted this article, I considered changing the title because I agree that it is somewhat sensationalist and slightly misleading. I chose just to keep the actual article headline because I couldn't think of anything better at the mome

I've actually seen links on hackernews that go to these big data dumps of information. Presumably, you'd check to see if your info was leaked using the browser's find mechanism. A clever enhancement is that as you type, JS on the page actua

I think he's right in a way, and wrong in another way. The combination of metro and desktop programs being used together in Windows 8 is somewhat of a usability nightmare. However, only using one or the other primarily works great. On my la

Sure, but from what you said I'm guessing that they don't work in IE9, which is what I mean about cross-browser issues. Plus, TypedArrays are somewhat clumsy maybe? It seems as if JS is the future, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, bu

I personally had a great AP CS teacher. It was my favorite class. I remember that most days we just went to class and worked on an assignment which was programming something specific in Java. The days we had lectures were always the worst.

The main advantage to Flash is that you get a much more mature language (Actionscript 3) to work with over JS and you also get a whole host of great APIs that are easy to use. (From ByteArrays, to the Camera class, to different blend modes

I'm curious to why HN would be walking such a performance tightrope. I could speculate, but it would be uninformed rambling, so I'd love it if someone more knowledgeable than I could explain.

Here's the reason I said that: "No matter what I try, I can't make it look pretty. I realize I'm such a horrible artist/designer that no matter how much effort I put in, it's always going to be an ugly mess if I do the front end. So what I

I disagree actually. I think having a specialization (front-end vs. back-end for example) is a good thing. It allows someone to dedicate themselves to one specific area and learn it thoroughly. When I'm doing back-end development, I love ha

The windowed slider panel is a great idea. I couldn't agree more with the author's assessment of how confusing normal switches as shown can be, as I've felt the same confusion in the past, and know others do too. Interesting post and great

Another big downside to intelligence tests is they can make you think you are just that intelligent. (More commonly known as pride / arrogance. We all suffer from this, but I digress.) I've had conversations online with people who have scor

You summed up my thoughts too. Windows 8 starts up about twice as quick for me, which is great. The explorer changes are nice enough, and if you don't like the rather large ribbon UI, you can just hide it. However, I also agree with you on

S3 allows you to include a maxfile size param in your upload signature, so it should be easy enough for this to be fixed. However, you still have to be careful, as someone uploading 100 10MB files is just as bad as 1 1000MB file.

My thoughts too. It seems logical to suggest that TDD would reduce the number of bugs in the product that's being tested, at least somewhat. However, the true question may be if the time spent writing those tests (longer that the time spent
