Here are a couple of related jobs that could be in a movie: 1. Disabling a terrorist weapon. When you find a mysterious box in NYC making ticking noises and emitting radiation, who you gonna call? 2. Forensics and attribution. When 1 fail

I am reworking the analysis of ECGs from an old contest, and I want help from an expert. In 2000 the Computers in Cardiology challenge (CINC2000) provided ECGs from sleep studies of 70 patients and asked contestants to identify obstructive

"Arithmetic coding for data compression" by Witten Neal and Cleary. 1987. https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/214762.214771 It explains that all that's left to work on for better lossless compression fac

If you need to detect anomalies as soon as they occur, that seems right. But if you want to detect them later you can also combine back-casting with forecasting. Like Kalman smoothing.

I agree with the article, and I find many of the comments here insightful. Relationships with some of my old school adversaries were healed when they attended my son's funeral. The movie Charade is sort of about the bad effects of a p

I too have served on faculty search committees and reviewed scores of papers. Many members of the committees only counted publications. I read some papers and commented on them without much effect.

Society with privacy is different from and preferable to society without privacy. For one example, a lack of privacy enables the identity based political fragmentation that afflicts us. For another example, in developing relationships of

I spent 4 years at Fairchild in the bipolar memory division in Mountain View, 15 years as a professor at Portland State, and 15 years working at LANL. On the plus side: At Fairchild I worked with a technology that made the fastest circuits

I read American Prometheus, and I think the movie is going to be hard on Strauss and Teller. I suppose that the DOE action this month will get mentioned in the closing credits. I don't know, that might seem too little too late to ge

I agree. I published code that I used for my dissertation (more than 30 years ago). I think it led to thousands of citations.

I retired rather than go along with extremely bad scientific/technical decisions by managment. Also, continuing to work was not improving my finances very much.

Asking for help from NNSA is exactly the kind of thing I hope the broadband manager will do. We need to find and hire the broadband manager first.

My reflex is to approach a problem/issue from a technical perspective. However, you are correct, we need political and managerial perspectives. I am not in charge, I am only a citizen advocate, but I will advocate for something like

I think there is something called REDInet that runs up 84 to Taos. And I've heard that Los Alamos County has some kind of in with that new path. Also, I think Comcast and others piggy back on the existing link that DOE uses. Finally,

You are correct about ESnet. Before I quit LANL last year, I ran traceroute from my LANL desktop to my house. I found that the packets went through Sunnyvale. If LANL is serious about WFH, they will address that.

One of the big drivers in Los Alamos is working from home. I think that StarLink's latency would be a problem there.

The best win is that the County owns the last mile fiber and customers buy service that they choose. Part of the reason I prefer that has to do with issues like net-neutrality. You are correct about the other utilities. The Feds actually

Los Alamos County owns the electric, gas, water, and wastewater utilities. So they own the poles and have rights of way. I think we are in a better position in that regard than most communities. However, you may be correct that the pay s
