I hadn't thought of that. I've only recently gotten a 3G-capable iPad, and I did manage to rack up 121MB in a few hours of browsing.

My pet peeve is deep links that get redirected to the mobile home page. That and sites that open in "mobile mode" on a tablet. 10x7 should be plenty of pixels for your normal site.

"Not sure what happens if you don't have the app installed - does it ask you to download the app instead?" FWIW Apple handles this by preinstalling and not allowing you to remove the YouTube app. For other use cases there are a couple of ad

The whole Address Book framework on iOS seems to have gotten the shit end of the doody stick when they were handing out skilled programmer-hours at Apple. For example it's inexplicably implemented as a bunch of low-level Core Foundation cal

It's definitely fun to use, but since it's gotten such glowing press, I'll be a negative nancy and point out the flaws :). The biggest one is that it's hard or impossible to do a few important things with the same hand that's holding the ph

Good point. Most homes around here are wired with 200A, 240V power, so a 20kW charger would eat up about half of that. So a 7.2kW charger is about 2500 times slower than a fast gas pump. Even slow gas pump (say 10MW), used with a convention

Petroleum is really frickin' energy-dense (leaving aside the fact that unless you're heating something only a small fraction can be turned into useful work). A mid-range home EV charger peaks out at about 20kW. By contrast, the energy flux

With a few caveats, I agree: I believe that drunk drivers should not (in the typical case) lose their driving privileges when convicted of driving while intoxicated. After all, they're not bad drivers (when sober), they're bad drinkers. Tha

What you've just described is known in the planning field as suburban sprawl, and is not without traffic problems of its own. If you start with an assumption of auto-dependence, then your conclusion follows, but the article is really arguin

It's been proposed that municipalities that want to increase density in a particular district convert their property taxes to land taxes in a revenue-neutral way. That makes it much more painful to leave real-estate in a less-than-maximally

I highly doubt that Bluetooth 4.0 is going to remove the biggest obstacle to these sorts of applications on the iPhone, which is Apple's review process. Right now if your Bluetooth device corresponds to one of the handful of profiles with b

So what is the functional difference between a shared-ownership, driverless car, and a standard human-driven taxi? Don't underestimate the price difference. It's one of those things where a large enough quantitative difference becomes a q

You're right, instead of "would" I should've said "might". I was taking the parent's assumption as a given for argument's sake.

I think you're spot on. But I think the removable trunk will be combined with a passenger-less unit that carries the trunk back to your house and drops it off. Sort of a tiny version of container shipping.

If cars are getting 20 times more use they will wear out much more quickly than they do now. Existing cars, if driven 20 times as much, would wear out 20 times more quickly, like taxicabs do now. But it's also possible that cars would sim
