One possible improvement (and maybe it's not feasible—you've obviously spent a lot more time thinking about this than I have) would be to accept any object that implements NSCoding, rather than strictly NSDictionary objects. Depending on ho

It would be interesting news if intervening with blood-pressure-lowering drugs led to a reduction in brain aging against a control group. For now it's just an interesting correlation, and it's kind of disappointing to see the Heart Associat

Have you considered a one-time-use (or limited-time) PIN for deliveries? You could also replace your PIN-free pizza-guy mode with a fixed pizza guy PIN (say, 74992) that's similarly only valid for an hour.

I don't entirely agree with the reasoning, but I think it goes like this: Historically transportation in NYC has been pretty egalitarian (leaving aside car service). A 1-percenter pays the same cab fare, subway fare, or (heaven forfend) bus

Probably not. The PIN never leaves a (unmodified) terminal unencrypted. However (as mentioned previously) it would be pretty straightforward to obtain an identical terminal, insert a logging circuit inside of it (connected directly to the k

One gripe: The OP goes on about how energy required goes up with the cube of speed, but that's only true if the flights you're comparing take the same amount of time. Common sense says you should compare two flights covering the same distan

I'm in Canada a lot, but I'm here (Bellingham) more, so I'm torn. Right now I'm trying to decide between sticking with AT&T's Nationwide plus Canada and a global data add-on ($110/month) and Verizon's cheapest Sharing is Caring option p

Anyone know if VZW will let you use something other than the "Share Everything" plans with the iPhone 5? I'd like to switch (they're the only ones with LTE coverage in my city) but probably half of my calling is to/from/in Canada.

I agree with your comments on the benefits of cooking as many meals as possible from scratch, and on the idea that it clearly was possible for people decades and centuries ago to avoid getting fat. So absent some pervasive non-dietary effec

Since the motors are engaged full time (no freewheel) and are self-exciting, they're going to give some drag due to iron losses, which is magnified by the gearing of the belts, as well as some stored angular momentum. So I think it could wo

Looks like they're toothed belts, so they should perform OK when wet. It also looks like they have a belt per wheel, so there's a good deal of redundancy. Because there's apparently no differential gearing it means you have to lift up the o

Segways are actually pretty hard to ride if you've ever ridden a standard skateboard. The stability control gain needs to be super high because it's so tippy, so you can easily get it to oscillate if you're not used to riding a self-balanci

I once had a co-worker whose side project was a little wireless weather station transmitter (back in the late 90s). He was getting reports of the batteries draining in a matter o days, when in testing (and in theory) they should last months

That's right, but they wouldn't necessarily have to (strictly speaking) sell copies. They could instead license the right to make copies for a fee. My suspicion is that that fee would be set to extract as much money as possible from the r

I'm curious as to why OP keeps insisting that current Thunderbolt ports can't support a QFHD (3840 x 2160) display. Thunderbolt layers a few lanes of PCIe with a DisplayPort 1.2 signal. DisplayPort 1.2 supports QFHD at 30 bits/pixel and 60H

There's really the exact same copyright-induced inefficiency in traditional video rental places. It always struck me as bizarre that a video rental place could "run out" of copies of a particular film, when at trivial expense they could man

My first question when considering outsourcing a task is this: is it a chore or a project? A project is some usually non-recurring task in a field that I enjoy and/or would like to get better at. A chore is some usually recurring task in a

My strategy is to use a human-readable password for my guest network (which I actually considered leaving completely open), and a crazy-long random password that I copy and paste from my password manager for my internal network.

Bike theft seems like one of those quality-of-life crimes (like graffiti and coercive squeegee-monkeys) that's begging for some kind of creative enforcement strategy. - If there's an open-air bike market at 7th and Market, it seems like you

Wha? The UI needs to keep processing events to remain responsive. If you have a long-running (relatively speaking, say 10 milliseconds) process like uncompressing an image, you don't want your UI to lag for that long. You could have the ima

The phrase I've heard is that being early is the same as being wrong. Trying to make Burner in 2003 would be like trying to make YouTube in 1996.

If by "created" you mean "enhanced and renamed". By that standard UC Berkeley "created" BSD and Tim Berners-Lee "created" HTML.
