We partner with Datastax as their go-to hosted solution for Cassandra; their support tiers don't include operations or instance management. We handle all Cassandra maintenance, ring expansion, daily backups, and upgrades. Upgrades are an i

Interesting. Just because it's standard, doesn't necessarily make it perfect? I guess I'm just looking for a versioned script repository that's authenticated and has an easy API to roll credentials. Is it too much to ask!? :)

So, ideally, if you "shared" an endpoint, and the Gist was marked "private", you'd get something standard like "unathenticated". Why else make it private?

FYI: private Github Gists are not as private as you think

There is definitely a learning curve associated with proper NoSQL data-modeling (and slightly different for each of the above stated DBs), but a place for both relational and non exists, as they each solve different problems! (NoSQL being r

I originally built node-monitor ( https://github.com/franklovecchio/node-monitor/tree/v0.5 ) to monitor multiple servers; I was trying to emulate Splunk by sending all data from an environment to a couple servers, which then pushed out to w

The startup I work for is filled with boxes of Arduino parts, Enterprise devices in different stages, and anything we find on the interwebs that makes a cool demo (e.g. shit that flys and has an Android SDK) -- I wouldn't have it any other

What about 0MQ and MQtt? Both of those are "realtime" solutions, and can also be integrated with devices, like phones (Facebook Messenger, for one). 0MQ has flashsocket support, too.

All good questions! A base ring is 4 nodes (one in each us-east zone), and you can choose m1.small, m1.large, and m1.xlarge instances. This allows you to create keyspaces with RF 3 safely. I don't have prices on-hand, but I believe the m1.

For those who are newer to Cassandra, or don't want to host it themselves, we offer a hosted solution on Heroku (just REST), or a managed Enterprise ring (with a REST API) -- http://cassandra.io . I apologize for the website...we just hi

Sure. I'm actually working on a bootstrap project which uses Gists and Node.js to spin up a scaling infrastructure: https://github.com/franklovecchio/yc-bootstrap . Instead of using CloudFormation, which I loathe, or Puppet/Chef (which h

I use Gists as user-data files for EC2 deployments. Works amazingly well.

Looking at its config, I'm reminded of Cassandra 0.6, but then I see the ZooKeeper functionality. Interesting. Love the open-sourcing! I showed an example of how to distribute inter-mingled DBs using MQtt a bit ago, but never posted here:
