True, although I wonder if doing it over even a 100m cliff, but with a much larger weight, would be cheaper than the drilling operation.

This is exactly why I contributed. In fact this morning, by coincidence, I had my first ever PR accepted, and it was for this piece of software [1]. I was using youtube-dl to download VK videos, but I really wanted to be able to download an

I don't understand why they need to dig holes to do this. Why not build something equivalent onto the side of a cliff?

Is this actually serious? I would actually really love that. Would save so much strain on my fingers and it would probably even give my legs a bit of a workout.

Interesting. That is probably the reason why ex-councel houses are rented out for so much money after they are bought from the council. They are often in very desirable areas. I wonder what the measurable/measured effects of this delib

I have no idea. Probably an interesting project for the author, or maybe they are trying to fix some backwards-compatibility debt from the aforementioned languages. Either way, it would be good to see this mentioned as the first point on th

Agreed. People seem to talk about more "friendly" cultures as being objectively better than less friendly ones. And by friendly they usually mean random strangers starting small talk with you more frequently. Personally, I normall

Compared to the maps of living-area-by-race in the US [1], it seems like there is much less segregation between black and white people in London. I wonder why this is the case? Also, I wonder why there is still heavy segregation in regards

This looks great. I have recently started a simple physics-based rope swinging game in Elm. It's a lovely language to use, but I have found the workflow quite frustrating. I love the "try elm" editor on the website for the qu

It wasn't his aim to have no apps, just apps that are distracting and time-wasting. For example, he says that he likes having useful apps like Google and Uber installed. This is the same view that I have towards my smartphone, although

Bear in mind that this increase has come about because of improved treatment of particular diseases, not because of progress in tackling the root causes of ageing. The point is, it seems to be very hard to push the human body above 100, and

Why is the fact that it is NP-hard a fundamental problem for real-world systems? Sure, it is hard to solve in the mathematical sense, but in the real world it appears as though approximate algorithms for practically all well-known NP-hard p

If anyone is curious about numbers. In 2012, out of 134,100 police officers in England and Wales [1], 6,756 are authorised to carry firearms [2]. So roughly 5%. Even if a police officer is authorised to carry a firearm, they must be authori

I have a Contour; I bought it mainly because specs-wise it was much cheaper than gopro equivalents. There was also some driver issues with the latest gopro model at the time. In hindsight though I think I should have got a gopro. There are

Did you try and install the package "haskell-platform"? That's probably the easiest way to get Haskell up and running. Then it's a simple matter of using cable to install other libraries, including Hakyll.

I didn't see Hakyll [1] on the list. It is a minimal static site generator written in Haskell. I have just set it up for my first personal site [2]. It is my first experience using a static site generator, and so far I can highly recom

Off the top of my head, I would assume that it's because in nature solar systems form by dust gradually accumulating into planets. This is different to just plonking a brown dwarf right into the fully formed system. I also think that t
