Yeah, sorry - that part was a bit brief, and is only a hunch. I genuinely think though that the command line is more popular now than, say, 10 years ago.

Amazingly you've all missed the big problem with electronic books. One I worry about from time to time. There's a reasonable chance our civilisation will collapse in the near future (within 100 years). (Not going to go into detail of why -

My (minimal) criteria is it has to be packaged in Debian. A couple years ago I considered both MongoDB and CouchDB immature for that reason. The recent confusion of CouchDB/Couchbase etc. shows that was a reasonable view.

This doesn't feel aggressive enough. How about blocking any domain registered with GoDaddy from a certain date? Do it on DNS servers Hacker News techies control. Extreme I know, but less extreme than what SOPA will do!

Love that story! Thanks for linking to it. Just as hard with software, whatever version control system is used... Who is going to remember the culture of old-but-still-running Ruby on Rails apps in 30 years time, when even Node.js isn't fas

Great to see this discussion - I think that most contracts in many areas of law could be standardised. The same way that open source and creative commons licenses standardise those areas. A few of us are working on starting a non-profit to
