I strongly suspect that at the time they signed the deal (5 years ago), Twitter didn't have the technical capability to resell data (the site itself was going down lots!), so they had to do deal with DataSift and others. DataSift previ

Of course moving to Rust (or Go) won't fix all security bugs. It will though stop ordinary random code having remote code execution or spurious data leak bugs. That is really significant. It needs cheering and encouraging now, and soon

Well, Instagram and Twitter are converging in terms of feature set. They're pretty well indistinguishable now. They've not totally converged in terms of audience, but I think have surprising overlaps. Lots of Twitter data use case

I'm sure Datasift saw it coming. I researched this last summer. Even before I was explicitly told all the original firehose contracts were five years long, I could infer it from attitudes and behaviours. I'm excited that Datasift

I think this needs more detail as to what stage in the tech lifecycle the businesses are in. Obviously, I'm going to trust an electricity company to provide my business with electricity. I'm even going to trust laptop manufacture

At ScraperWiki, we had our Twitter to spreadsheet tool cut off (at a much more modest size!). I wrote up an analysis of where you can get Twitter data from and why which is relevant: https://blog.scraperwiki.com/2014/08

My view - based on no evidence, just reasoning from what we know - is that China are scared of Github. They can't shut it down fully, because doing so would shut down their software engineering capability (it has got that important). A

The early ones did have serious programmers at them. My first memory of one is Yahoo using it to get people to use its API in London, about 10 years ago. That was when a web API with major data behind it was an important new thing. The open

Good marketing is part of a quality product. A key stage is hearing about a product at all - it is completely useless if you never hear about it. See my blog post "How to use time-travelling anthropologist pollsters to tell good from

I went to, probably the same, (big data) Gigaom event. I really enjoyed it - good people and talks. There weren't, however, many customers there. It was all other people selling stuff. So I didn't go again. The recent wave of data

The idea is to get everyone to routinely use encryption like Signal. This increases the cost of drag-net surveillance, forcing instead more specific targets. For that scenario, it doesn't matter if you're also vulnerable to direct

Great! The TextSecure brand is unfortunately dead to me. Although I liked the idea in theory of the SMS backwards compatibilty layer, in practice it confused people and caused technical problems which stopped many of my friends using it. Wi

Only the Android version of WhatsApp has encryption, as far as I can tell. Also WhatsApp (i.e. Facebook) get the metadata still - who messaged who, and when.
