I agree in general. However if you attempt to imagine how future/other observers might look at this current civilization's lack of attempt to deal with imminent climate change breakdown and the clinging to unreasonable belief in a

I guess it doesn't matter that much, but the author may want to rename. Orca as a name suffers from a collision with the relatively well-known windows installer table editor.

The Name of the Rose (Umberto Eco) surely? The tantalizing sense of loss as rare texts are censored and erased for ever, leaving as their only trace suggestive references and mentions in other works gets me every time.

There are two people "obviously" disabled in my workplace of circa 400. One of them walks to maintain their fitness from a cleverly chosen home in a town of just over 100K. The other drives. Nearly everyone else drives for life

Speaking of Chess, does anyone know what happened to Chess Academy?¹ I wanted to point someone towards it over Xmas and discovered that it was down (still is). It looked very promising at the time (I only skimmed through it quickly, possib

The Unihertz Jelly and Atom kickstarters were pretty succesful. I have only used the Jelly, but its fine for a low end small phone that can display webpages/maps when necessary. If it had better battery life I would not want anything

What you say is correct, but partial. If you cannot reproduce then you do not know whether it is due to the equipment/materiel varying or not and you have severely reduced options for investigating that. If you look at the problems wit

Exactly. Nvidia have been relentlessly hostile to Free Software for ever. No one who wants an easy life or a stable, upgradeable operating system would buy an Nvidia card.

I did not say searching through the _entire_ dictionary. It is still removing one of the skills that Scrabble traditionally rewards: knowing how to spell.

So just searching through a smaller space in the dictionary rather than the entire dictionary. It's still turning a feat of human skill and memory (remembering what words exist and how they are spelled) into a mere sideshow.

a dictionary can be used whenever you want, to look up a specific word in mind only (you cannot leaf through it for ideas) I really dislike this idea. It turns the human into a mere mechanical Turk, searching through the dictionary

Quick question for US readers as a check on my predjudices: I mostly find it deeply disturbing to hear a strong American/Canadian accent in fantasy works. Does the reverse apply for you?
