How would money laundering via prepaid SIMs work? Every time I've gotten a prepaid card, I've had to show identification (usually a passport outside the US). From what I recall the ostensible reason for this is to track people who might use

To me, the most interesting part of the story is the parenthetical comment at the end: (Incidentally, because of some of the changes we are being required to make, we cannot guarantee that Scrivener on the Mac App Store will have a

What happens if a telco doesn't want Skype in the version of the Apple App Store or Google Play Store their customers see? It's simple and straightforward. They make a phone call and it's done. Maybe some grumbling if the other store doesn'

Amazon has effectively guaranteed it will stay that way for a while. Don't forget: Even early on, the Amazon Appstore was popular enough to force AT&T to stop blocking sideloading. It is only more popular today.

This doesn't seem like a big deal. Outside of Windows RT, Flash on the desktop (including the Windows 8 desktop) has been unrestricted the whole time. So this only affects Windows RT users and people using the formerly-called-Metro version

And if you're a content creator or video professional? Or try to make a website that serves a lot of H.264 video and then come back and tell us how free H.264 is. More generally, this is a video format we're talking about. "Free as in speec

The alleged infringement was massive - every download of Chrome 6+ and every Gingerbread+ Android device (or at least the ones with the Google apps) to start. And all of it could easily have been willful - On2 and MPEG-LA had apparently tan

They did pay. Google spent over $100 million on On2 Technologies, the company behind the VP codecs. Did you expect more than buying a company and employing their developers?

Indeed. In fact, it was ready so long ago that Firefox was in the Android Market for almost a year.

The license agreement also applies to future codecs derived from VP8, most specifically VP9, so I doubt the MPEG-LA thought it was giving a license to a dead effort.

Doesn't it depend on how much they paid? If the person paid for much less than the restaurant was asking and/or for less than a court case would cost, I'd say they won. And as long as the size of Google's MPEG-LA payment isn't visible in th

I didn't say what sort of Minix monoculture we might have wound up with. In particular, who says the licensing would have been fixed? Without Linux's success how many people would have thought there was a problem?

A Minix monoculture never happened. But what would actually have been wrong with it? Think of all of Tanenbaum's design decisions that Linus ended up changing. One big reason we know, in detail, what would have been wrong with a Minix monoc

As some one who (peripherally) lived through the gcc/egcs schism, I'd certainly love to hear their perspective on open-source monoculture. Somehow I don't think it would be nearly as monoculture-friendly as you do.
