The most surprising part of this story is that RealNetworks is still in business. What a horrible piece of software, on the server and the client side.

I absolutely would get excited for Dropbox saying they reached 10 million paying users. =)

I admit, my post was an overreaction. My concern, and the reason I've stopped reading TC, was that we're in a culture that celebrates VC funding as some sort of business success. It's a milestone, but it's not success (in my eyes, anyway).

Sigh, another article that celebrates funding as some type of success. It isn't. What matters is what they do with that money.

You're assuming he's only taking one exposure per scene. It's easy to take that many photos in only a few days, let alone a week. Hell, I can take 300 shots of my infant son playing around in about 15 minutes.

Nice writeup. I've been using a system like this for years, having reached many of the same conclusions. The only wrinkle is when sites require you to use capital letters, special characters, restrict password length, etc.

It really isn't an interesting exercise. It's comparing one bombing by one person to thousands of acts of vandalism and theft by thousands of people. It's fairly self evident that "looking deeper into the root causes" is not going to preven

Maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but why haven't these companies distributed their compute resources across various facilities and cloud providers, enabled instant failover, and tested this before outages like these?

This looks fantastic, just what my company was looking for to quickly develop websites for the small business clients we deal with. They all want a CMS, but the value proposition just isn't there for us for a $2,000 project that requires al

Articles like this are hilarious, especially for those of us that helped design, build and manage Google's datacenters at one point or another. First, the number of servers may be impressive, but anyone that's done large scale computing can

That kind of blew my mind too. Three years in prison for "transmitting porn", prosecuted in a state in which he didn't even reside? WTF. Here's some more detail from the US Appellate Court: https://www2.bc.edu/~herbeck/cyberlaw.thomas.html

To clarify, I meant over the long term. If you're not making profits or at least breaking even over the long term (spending <= revenues), you're out of business. The problem with the US is that they aren't just borrowing in a low season

No, they want spending to be less than or equal to revenues. That's the only rational way to run a business.

I worked at Google for 5 years. 9-5 is possible, though most people work extra hours. The more important issue is the mental energy. 8 hours at Google is different from 8 hours at a low-key tech gig.

I think this was the more important bit: Again, to belabor the obvious: The illegal version isn't just free. It's better.

Really? YouTube could remove the comments and not only would I likely not notice, but I'd consider it an improvement. Their current comments harbor some of the most idiotic fury I've seen on the internet.

I worked there for 5 years in cluster management / datacenter operations, from 2005 - 2010. While I had a blast, I'm now working for myself (consulting + startups) and could not be happier. Google is the right place for certain kinds of peo

I use Compass/SASS with the 960gs grid system, allowing me to create purely semantic HTML while the layout remains in CSS. Using a grid system doesn't necessarily pollute your content. https://github.com/chriseppstein/compass-960-plugin/
