Reporting everywhere is diminishing because people want short spammable memes that validate their opinions and beliefs over news that can enlighten them. The internet has decimated longform journalism and the market no longer exists for it.

Yes, I think more and more we are seeing that. The post was flagged, but it's worth a discussion. Anecdotally, under previous names, I've noticed that before on HN thoughtful conversations could happen when it came to politics. I&

It's starting to become heavily political, I agree. Seeing debates about Trump/Pelosi on here is very saddening. Anecdotally it seems that discourse on politics here has become much less of seeking understanding and much more snar

Tourism isn't always good. Places get trashed, many "tourist" destinations are starting to regulate because people come in, trash the place, and don't give a fuck and leave. It's sad

Yep, but that doesn't matter. It's another item they can advocate for with absolutely no impact to their lifestyle at all, so they can virtue signal.

I don't see why we need to end tipping. Keep it, and raise wages. I get that it's the flavor of the week for people to rally around, but I don't see a problem. Let's let the market solve the problem. The last thing we ne

Anyone can work in a kitchen. It's physically demanding, but the tasks are not that hard and easily picked up without any real education. Sorry that's just the truth. And why we don't have as many programmers as service worke

It doesn't take much to open a small business. There's a reason many small businesses fail, and often times it is the result of rather foolish decisions and ideals.

A hidden major problem too can also be your neighbors, who can be incredibly annoying and won't go anywhere anytime soon. If you rent, oh well, go somewhere else. Not so easy with a house, also excluding neighbors who do legal things t

You lose it until you sell it. It's unfair to say just because it's an illiquid equity that it's same as cash.

The problem is people are expecting the asteroid impact, or the single point where "civilization is collapsed." These aren't helpful and aren't realistic. Even historical societal collapses happen over periods of centuri

Freedom of speech is certainly under attack and has been under attack by the previous administration more blatantly than ever. And of course, as is typical with the US, once one administration gets away with something, the future ones do, a

This would only apply to local town squares. You can not reasonably argue that a worldwide forum is a US town square.

That's not a lot of money, period, considering the hours and the inflation due to overtime. Consider too that that is the median - many are making far below that. Most people making money in trades make most of it working more than 40

The point I'm making is that people are different. Some people make friends at work, others don't. While you may struggle blurring friend from colleague in the office, others may struggle WFH with separating their house and leisur

This is just pedantic. I'm sorry in your experience you didn't meet lifelong friends, but many do (I have.) My point is, there isn't a right or wrong here. It's frustrating see the WFH warrior brigade come out and dimini

Not to the extreme people with ADHD have. For example, I know many people who just don't show up for work. They just can't get up and do it and they get fired. That isn't typical for how "everyone behaves."

I feel like I hear this statement a lot, but is there any real evidence of this? First, I doubt there is any historical evidence of such a phenomenon. Second, ADHD isn't nearly as prevalent enough in the general population to suggest t
