You are correct. You're talking about "opportunity cost" I kinda touched on it with "and long-term maintenance". For video game ports you can bypass the direct opportunity cost by doing a rev-share deal with one of

It's funny you mention that. You know which platform is super duper mega easy to cross-compile to? And you know what platfrom is (almost) FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE to compile against an arbitrarily old version of glibc? The answer (in order)

Sarcasm is an extremely poor method of communication. Speak plainly and clearly. > Performance profiling and debugging tools are critical for game development. Profiling and debugging tools are RADICALLY superior on Windows. RADICALLY. G

I don't need to imagine a made-up scenario that doesn't make sense. We can look at what has happened at face value. The calculus is very very very boring and simple. Game devs will support every single platform on the planet in wh

Naive Question: is DeepSeek V4 actually cheaper to run? Or is it cheaper because of other reasons? For example Anthropic running at a higher margin or DeepSeek at a larger loss?

10B at their valuation from last November is an absolutely killer deal. If Anthropic had sufficient compute supply they could raise at 2x easily if not 3x.

I hate environment variables. I hate them so so so much. I can’t think of a single time I would prefer an envvar to a config file. They’re somewhat necessary when dealing with Docker. But I also hate Docker. So it’s not surprising when one

if the main product is nostalgia then it’s a derived work and you don’t get to claim moral superiority. if they created genuinely novel mechanics that can stand on their own then they should do that. Like you said, DOTA2 was a 1:1 mechanica

Rust also has run-time crash checks in the form of run-time array bounds checks that panic. So let us not pretend that Rust strictly catches everything at compile-time. It’s true that, assuming all things equal, compile-time checks are bett

Git LFS is a gross hack that results in pain and suffering. Effectively all games use Perforce because Git and GitLFS suck too much. It’s a necessary evil.

The fact that Git has an extremely strong preference for storing full and complete history on every machine is a major annoyance! “Except for network IO” is not a valid excuse imho. Cloning the Linux kernel should take only a few seconds. I

Mercurial has a strictly superior API. The issue is solely that OG Mercurial was written in Python. Git is super mid. It’s a shame that Git and GitHub are so dominant that VCS tooling has stagnated. It could be so so so much better!
