Unfortunately liberalism as a movement is not at all consistent. One would think that the liberals posters on HN would downvote that grandparent to hell and voice support for your post. But they don't, because Holmes is not supported

Sexual attraction is a powerful thing. Anyone who thinks they can cleanly separate their emotions from their sex drive is kidding themselves. Tinder is bringing casual sex to people (male and female) who might not have considered it as an

Tenure if a contract between the employee and the university. It says nothing about the university's or the employee's relation to a third party. You're just going for a cheap shot by bringing up an unrelated gripe.

Agreed, these laws are more like anti-trust laws. Free market economics, according to its primary academic proponents (academic economists) is not the same as, nor is it even consistent with, the government enforcing arbitrary contracts.

What if the dominant discourse on poverty is just wrong? What if the problem isn’t that poor people have bad morals – that they’re lazy and impulsive and irresponsible and have no family values – or that they lack the skills and smarts to

There's a huge discrepancy between your comment being second from the top, and where a similar comment would be if we replace a mugging with an anonymous rape threat, even though both are equally unverifiable and easy to find details t

You say "personally if I wanted to facilitate the spread of liberal ideas in Russia, the very last thing I'd do is boost US power to be a convenient bogeyman for Russians to unite against", and characterize my ideas as a &quo

It's hard to characterize this movement that this article is critiquing, because it is diffuse. But I think it's fair to say that events in Syria and Iraq, and the anti-Russian stance taken by the liberal media, show that there i

Races are not difficult to distinguish, in fact determining self-identified race from genetic data is trivial, and genetic data is clustered in ways that reflect the common usage of racial categories. For example see http://www.

It's interesting that despite trying to be highly sympathetic, the article still paints Goodman in a bad light, in my opinion. All Goodman can say is that race is a continuum, not a finite set. But so what? Self defined race is stil

The US is in the middle east because of oil and Israel. Both reasons. If you think it's just oil, the ADL and AIPAC are going to get mad at you for not giving them credit where it's due. And on top of that, now it seems like li

And yet this is what the majority of people in on HN are arguing here. So you have to ask, why is a certain viewpoint laughable when applied to illegal immigrants from South America, but reasonable when applied to H-1B visas?
