I think the impact size of that effect is likely to be very, very small. The whole thread reeks of gatekeeping around (as someone in another comment put it) what it means to be "Real Founder."

I'm curious if the author has data that the 'free sabbatical' folks are less successful as founders than others. If YC is selecting the wrong types of people/companies for their batches, I think they'll figure it ou

Yeah, the idea of creating an environment that only favors young, privileged, unattached folks has always been pretty off-putting for me. Larger checks certainly attract the 'free sabbatical' folks that the author seems to dislike

If that logic were true, then there would be far fewer companies built by founders who already have a successful exit. The success of a company is far more likely to be correlated by the founders not having to put their own wellbeing on the

I don't fault Verizon for cutting budget. It's absolutely the right thing to do. But if we weren't in the situation we're in they probably wouldn't be doing this. The nuance between "we're going to stop do

Sounds like Verizon's Facebook advertising spend is losing value because of COVID-19, so they're using this a way to redirect focus away from the negative impact on their business. All of the companies doing this right now are &#x

The irony of this is that they have a marketplace and very large user base exactly because of the developers that have built for their platform.

I'm trying really, really hard to understand how this is even possible and coming up empty. Obviously, there is a ton of evidence in the responses on that page that indicates that this is happening, but I don't understand it.

What they said wasn't wrong. Their mental model was absolutely correct. "One third of this and one third of that is two-sixths of everything" is absolutely right. Telling them "No, you're wrong" is counter-prod

I don't think I agree with everything here. Glossing over critical mental models while explaining new concepts is what creates the confusion. Absolutely using drawings would have made things easier. That's a good way to establish

Also a fantastic way to represent this. The assumption in fractional arithmetic is that you're always performing arithmetic on things with the same type/unit. The two formulas on the board are essentially: 1/3x + 1/3y =

The units are missing, and I think that's a key factor here. Both of the equations up on the board at the end are correct because they are counting different things. This is a huge miss if you use a numeric only approach to fractions.

This is one of the best 'get off my lawn' articles I've seen. Obviously deeply flawed but this bit stood out: > "Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more cl

While I still have kids at home, we'll probably stay where we are (Bay Area). Once they're gone, though, my partner and I have talked a lot about spending 2-4 months at a time in different parts of the world. We have a list of pla

This sort of assumes that research can only happen at - or in partnership with - a university doesn't it? Those two activities (research and learning/certification) do not have to be tied together.

To be fair, I consider going on trips and camping to be work. But I agree, there are ways to balance things, but you have to choose. You can't have everything (work, side project, family, health, hobbies) at 100% and be the best versio

There's more to it than that. It's not just about a professional advantage - it's about company cultures that are toxic toward people with families. This quote for example: 'I’ve asked David Wong, working in the cryptocu

Not necessarily. Casinos will kick you out for a particular set of behaviors. Just winning isn't enough. Playing a minimum bet for a long time, then suddenly increasing to the max near the last half of a shoe is a good way to get a cas

This is basically the opposite of the ideal solution. The solution is to remove dangerous drivers from having control of 2-ton deathtraps, not contributing to the same behavior that is causing the problem. Opportunistic, unsafe behavior is
