I had a fun time making a game using MIDI with some friends for a game jam. There was a godot extension for MIDI (that I ended up mostly cannabalizing to get more control) and I used it to read and animate musical bars in a sort of guitar h

I think this will fall under what are termed personality rights, and the answer varies by state within the US.

The article states that they already had an in house solution for cold data, so one of the benefits they claim is simplifying by moving to one system for both hot and cold data.

If they're not significant, then why does youtube build ASICs for doing video encoding? See e.g., https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/04/youtube-is-now-build...

Clang doesn't know about the static code, so it can't do the optimizations this does. You could probably do the same thing with some hacky C++ code gen and templates, but I'm not sure clang et al would be able to optimize the

I'm guessing live video looks a lot different from a more static video site. I think encoding and storage are both quite expensive. You want to encode videos that are likely to be watched in the most efficient ways possible to reduce n

On a similar vein, I have a deep yearning for a solar gravity lens to be used to image exo planets within my lifetime. I've got a long time, but it's frustrating to see so little movement on big astronomy projects like these.

Maybe it would help, but I remember the issue being more the sharp contrast and weirdly vibrant colors than the actual brightness itself.

We're a bit off-topic, but there's no requirement that your account be associated with your identity, especially when the op is pretty clearly involved with the project (as opposed to if they were claiming not to be or something).

My favorite non Euclidean game is antichamber. It's a bit dated now (and the graphics are kind of eye burning) but it was a neat puzzler. Edit: I had the name wrong, ita antichamber! As many others have correctly stated.

NeRFs are sort of last year's technology. The latest hype is about gaussian splats. My understanding is that essentially these technologies take some images as input, and then train a model, where the model is learning the best way to

It's kind of amazing that they're able to take drawing of a scene someone imagined and then create (bad) 3d models. Imagine if in the future an artist could sketch a couple of images from a scene and then get an accurate 3D model?

Great advice! Ideally, you can provide isolation between users on the same "tier" so that no one user can crowd out others.

I think you always want to take many pictures (significantly more than 100, it mentions a 10h integration time, which I think means taking photos for 10 hours in a row?), so if you take them 100x slower it will both take much longer, and th

Hm, this is true, but I think it's worth pointing out that this is more general. The article was focusing on how JIT is harder than interpreting, whereas neither model in parent's post is inherently more complicated.

Imo hn isn't just for people posting open source, but also for sharing what you've built. As long as someone isn't spamming I think this kind of thing is fine. I do think it's a little off that they're posting from

Yes it does. Let's say you have 100 trips to send money vs 1 trip. If there's a 10% chance to be caught on each trip, then with 100 trips 10 people are caught on average, whereas with 1 trip a tenth of a person is caught on averag

If you assume that there's an even chance of getting caught (e.g., if searches are random based on the traveler) then fewer larger trips reduces the number of times your agent is caught. Given that it seems reasonable to assume risk is

Are you eyes more sensitive to UV than the rest of your body? I guess melanin absorbs UV in the skin, so this serves a similar purpose in the eye?

I think they're missing a dimension, how annoying is something to replace. In particular for car tires this called out to me. Going to an auto shop is an all day adventure for me, whereas almost anything else can easily be ordered or p

I'm not sure this is true. In the long run, it makes sense to consume power when renewables can supply it, instead of having to store it in a battery and use it later. In the short term however, renewables can't scale up in demand

I think you can store energy here not just in the gravitational potential energy of the water, but also in the compression of the air. I _think_ this means that you can get away with a smaller cavern than you could for just pumped hydro. Yo
