I had this experience with the so-called "app servers" at our company. We also have a daily batch processing system has tons of operational support, db+serivice monitoring, a very useful web UI, logging split out, authorization sy

Just as a counterpoint, I've done a little bit of game programming and currently work on a tax reporting system (mostly). Both are full of random shit you have to know for no reason. The game random shit I've had to learn was ofte

I've always seen it like trying to measure the length of a coastline or any other fractal curve. The more you zoom in any particular task or part of the curve keeps revealing details previously unseen.

Okay I understand. In Java, the default String class has the option to "intern" a string which just maintains a list of strings that can be shared. The change was made because often the devs were unaware of the string manipulation

Java's sub-strings used to work sort of like this but was changed to use copy semantics. The structure was to have a "char[]" and an "offset" into that array. This allowed sub-strings to share the underlying array.

If you have something else other than text that you want to be the focus of the page like a photo, reducing the contrast on the text allows the photos "pop" more if it using the range of light and dark. My personal color schemes a

These types of sites are where I too learned most of the graphics programming I know. My favorite when I was young was "The good-looking textured light-sourced bouncy fun smart and stretchy page" still available here: * https:&#x

As far as optical quality goes, focusing only on f-stops is like focusing on horsepower for cars. Even in f-stops, not all f-stops are equal since some lens transmit more light than others at the same f-stop. This is called t-stops and is u

Yea, this type of image recording has huge compromises but I personally find it really cool.

If instead of resolving points of light on the image sensor, you use a group of pixels to resolve an entire tiny image you can effectively also see around things. You end up with a picture of many small sections of the large image each at a

One of the ways to fight against this is to allow only text posts. Any sub that allows pics and gains enough people, the photos tend to float to the top. A clever pic is low engagement and can be consumed and upvoted in seconds. Add to this

Will it defeat the advantage or lessen it? For example, some people still need glasses after LASIK but still opt for it since they get end up with needing weaker lenses.

This looks so cool. I am casually interested in bird watching, especially being able to identify them via their songs. However the moment I click to "explore" it requires a login. Yet-another login to manage before I am get to sam

Unfortunately that incentive exists at home too. I, with my mom, were the primary caretakers of my father with dementia. Without any kind of sedation he was actually more mentally aware but also prone to violence, yelling, sprinting (if in

Sorry about your wife. It sucks to go through with that. Let me give you the other side of the story. My father is slowly succumbing due to frontal-temporal dementia. In the span of 10 years he's gone from a social, independent man to

It's interesting that you pretty much described a physical "discrete Fourier transform". Our cochlea works this way with different length hairs attached to nerves to hear different frequency ranges and old harmonic analyzers

I've been working on personal and professional projects where growth isn't a truly restricting constraint but is still an actual constraint. What do you mean by "meaningful"? Once I get into the 10's of terabytes th

I think that's a really shallow way to look at it. For a professional photographer it's the final version of the file that is actually sold, not the RAW or film negative. These final files are often not some 300x200 web preview. T
