We did look at that: we couldn't figure out a good way to have rsyslog read in the file and then send it remotely to another TCP syslog server. Is that possible? Also, this let us run on machines which aren't necessarily running rsyslog (yo

Ah, odd math point, but was I the only one who noticed this sentence: "focus on simplicity, ease of use, and reliability; using a room metaphor; 30% native, 80% HTML; embedded lightweight HTTP server; "

I think the pricing is partly as a driver for folks to do just that: host it themselves and flesh out the ecosystem.

Site looks decent, but they should either hide the pricing link or make it do something useful: getting the cats error page when I click on pricing isn't at all reassuring.

Femi from Hipmob here: we think we're reasonably secure. All communication to our communication network uses TLS: text, audio files or images are all encrypted in transit to/from the handset, and all authentication requests are over HTTPS.

Perhaps not everything should be packaged the same way, but one key advantage of the "one package system to rule them all" approach is that it really simplifies THINKING about your package installation needs. For systems composed of many pi

Amazing funding opportunities perhaps, but not so great profit opportunities. Let's not forget: app.net is actually looking to make a profit (an excellent idea, if you ask me), not just replace Twitter.

$1.99, perhaps? There was a pricing article on HN a few days ago that pointed out that the 99 cent thing really works, even if no one really seemed to have pinned down why.

Side note, but I'm curious: what do you use to send messages directly to the Facebook messages inbox? The standard FB dialog or is there some Graph API endpoint that will let you do that? My memory of the FB API is hazy, but a quick scan se

Its a small point, but I feel that MySQL administration via the console is easier to get into (for example, having SHOW CREATE TABLE to dump table creation SQL is operationally simpler than having to exit out of the console, then run pg_dum

OpenVPN actually works very well with compression: used it for 2 years to synchronize databases between 2 sites in India and one on the US and the compression cut the sync time nearly in half. It was pretty much fire-and-forget: I think I o

We wanted to make it easy to get in and try it, with no obligation. At the end of the 30 day trial period, we'll automatically switch you to the forever free plan (1 agent) if you don't have any billing information on file.

Actually, it is possible to host PHP on Heroku. For some reason, it is not particularly well advertised (unlike the Python/Node support) but if you push your PHP files they should do the right thing: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7947

A small point, but your API doesn't appear to use any kind of authentication/authorization: $handle = fopen("$sendy_url/subscribe/$sendy_email/$sendy_list/".str_replace(' ', '%20', $sendy_name).'/true', "r");`). In theory, anyone who knows

Is there any plan to support websockets on the Cedar stack? Cedar currently does not support websockets: you can only do long-polling.

One point: the Paypal micropayments tariff level makes sense for stuff under about $12 or thereabouts. For prices above that, it is actually worse. But yes, Stripe matching the micropayments levels would be kinda neat.
