First of all, the exactly same reasoning was used after the horrors of WWI, when everyone believed another European war will never be repeated, with known results on the readiness of the Swiss Army at the beginning of WWII. Second, conflict

From a financial perspective, Switzerland could definitely afford a larger military force (defence expenditure is around 0.6% of the GDP, as a comparison the NATO sets the guideline to 2% of the GDP [Note: Switzerland is not part of the NAT

The "office hour" argument really grinds my gears. It was originally a deliberate political decision to collaborate with neighboring air forces to save costs and work around the fact that there weren't enough pilots and mater

It's important to note that these are days gone by. The majority of these bunkers and forts are dismantled, the size of the army has gone down to 100,000 people (from 600,000 in the 50s, while the population has almost doubled), tanks

I'm not so convinced about using phages anymore, at least not on the same large scale that antibiotics are used (which is an economical necessity). Bacteria co-evolve with phages, especially using CRISPR ( https://www.nature.

I feel like an old man, when I say this (and maybe I am), but I'm starting to feel increasingly annoyed by drones in public. You hear the whirring of drones on a nice day by the lake, and sometimes even on some more popular mountain pe

Very well made and very educational! An often used algorithm for the calculation of the apparent sun position (given a date and latitude/longitude of the observer) is SPA of Reda et al. [1]. If you're interested, I wrote an Androi

You're of course right about growth curves being logistic functions with a plateau at the end. The question is however, where the plateau lies. Perhaps it's so far off that for practical purposes it doesn't really matter that

Your comment led me to look up the origin of the name "Lyme disease": Lyme disease gets its name from a small coastal town in Connecticut called Lyme. In 1975, a woman brought an unusual cluster of pediatric arthritis cases to the

I assume that it has a lot to do with the availability of fresh water and temperatures that stay within a range that is still suitable to crop farming. That part should be feasible to predict. I agree however that the resulting global confl

I'm wondering if there are any estimates/simulations on which countries or geographical regions would be the least impacted (or perhaps even benefit) from global warming. It's very defeatist, but maybe it would make sense to

In the end the concept of a species is a man-made construct that tries to shoehorn the evolutionary diversity into pigeonholes. For example, your definition of breeding might work okayish for higher eukaryotes, but is unusable for prokaryot

The £50 note was described (...) as the "currency of corrupt elites, of crime of all sorts and of tax evasion". I recently dealt with a 1000 CHF (= £811 = $1018) banknote in Switzerland. It's not very commonly used, but it ex

I don't understand why this is being downvoted, apart from non-scientific resentments. Nuclear power will be needed, together with renewables (hydro, wind, solar), to massively increase the chance to shift away from fossil energy.
