Nice! I knew about sprite shuffling and wondered how it would look here but didn't realize that was what was going on in this particular case.

As the creator, I feel this comment best reflects my mindset behind the pricing. In particular, at a lower price I'd be overwhelmed with fulfillment and I'm not interested in that.

Woah, hey, it's me! I wanted to share this on HN but wasn't sure if it was kosher. I guess someone else did it for me! I just started working on these last week and they were very well received on Twitter. Then, to my astonishment

Glad to see more graphics work being done in Go. This is built on `pinhole`, which is built on `gg`, a 2D rendering library that I wrote. How many layers deep can we get? :) https://github.com/fogleman/gg

An STL file is literally just a list of triangles. Each triangle has three vertices, each vertex has X, Y, Z floating point coordinates.

In general, simulated annealing is hard to parallelize. But in this case we also tend to get stuck in local minima a lot, because they are very deep troughs in the search space. (Annealing does still perform much better than hill climbing t

Right. I was doing a matrix transform on the AABB. I removed the need to do that by having a lookup table of already-rotated BVHs.

Somehow it seems less polished of a command line tool that way, but it was perfect for my needs. I actually ran it over night to pack a model of a deer, packing 8 of them together. It produced this histogram of scores: http://i.i

A couple performance optimizations I made that weren't covered in the article: - When I profiled my initial implementation of the annealing, I found that it was spending a lot of time just rotating bounding boxes to test for intersecti

I guess it isn't exactly bin packing or knapsack. Usually knapsack doesn't deal with dimensions but just a cost/weight. Consider it a variant.
