The word "xenoracism" has actually been applied, but it strikes me as a make-do lashed-together word. "Xenotyping" is no good because it already has a precise scientific definition. "Stereotyping" ends up the b

God save us from the insane low-contrast mafia. No, that's not intended as sarcasm.

That has nothing to do with the OS. The Intel ME is nothing more than some tech which can be leveraged/controlled by the BIOS/EFI - or not. There should always be a setting to just turn it off. The hysteria over Intel ME amuses me

No, Nothing about Lumina ties it to BSD. On the contrary; it's fundamentally easily portable to any OS. It runs just fine on Arch linux. The "idea" was to generate a basic DE that is not mired into any lame dependencies suc

Well, I do use a DE (MATE), and I think the appearance of Lumina DE is just fine. What kind of "polish" do you find missing?

Actually trivalent chromium is an essential nutrient (trace amounts). Hexavalent chromium is the "bad" chromium. Chromium metal is not considered a health hazard. Chromium salts (chromates) can cause allergic skin reactions.

Understood that mating the payload is a lot of work, but it is one hell of a lot less work than building a complete new payload.

I find the openbsd.org site to be excellently laid out and presented. Most sites on the web would do well to take lessons.

I fondly remember from my childhood the smell of wood smoke from fireplaces, and leaves being burned in piles in people's yards. Namby-pambyism has not yet stopped all burning in my town, and I occasionally get reminders of those day

I find intolerance in general mystifying. Inconvenience is inescapable. From my earliest age as a toddler, I was never bothered by cigarette smoke; in fact it was pleasant to me to breathe it in, and this used to give people some amusement.

I get that the right to consume any substance one wants into one's own body is a basic human right, but outlawing LSD and cannabis are two cases of outrageous, striking dumbness and pointlessness. Neither one is addictive, and the LD

The large volume of very hot exhaust you mention is your clue that the thermal efficiency of small gas turbines is poor to dismal.

1) That's not a "jet engine". It's a turboshaft. A turboshaft is a gas turbine producing its power mechanically at the shaft. A turbojet is a gas turbine producing its power in the form of reaction thrust out the tailpip

You heard wrong. Diesels under optimum conditions can easily exceed 45%, and state of the art is right around 50%. Gasoline engines can reach 40% or better (again, under optimum conditions). Turboshafts are generally around 35-40% efficienc

Both FreeNAS and NAS4Free are nothing more than FreeBSD with some GUI stuff pasted on. I am comfortable using ssh and [ba]sh, so I couldn't care less about the GUI. I just use the real thing: FreeBSD.

NAS4Free and FreeNAS are just relabeled FreeBSD with GUI stuff pasted on. FreeBSD doesn't have /dev/disk/by_{id,label,partuuid,path,uuid}. It's its biggest failing IMO. Their /dev/diskid is NOT what it sou

Rvalue references and std::move have largely obsoleted the argument of copy overhead. It makes particularly a dramatic improvement in container efficiency. C++11/14 really is a different language than C++98.

Rather than continue with unsupported opinion, I'd rather make the specific point that Boost served well as incubator and proving ground for such constructs as shared_ptr and unique_ptr, which have been subsumed into the C++ standard a

I find this criticism of xonsh's "modes" baffling. Xonsh is brilliant precisely because it isn't modal the way, e.g., vi is. Xonsh lets you freely mix python code and command invocations in a highly transparent way.
