Ask Apple what negotiations with Facebook are like when your goal is to copy their entire dataset and build a competitor. Nobody would be stupid enough to allow this with their own business.

This is a great improvement, and having JSON data for the metrics means that you can skip having the server render all those graphs via rrdtool and instead use something like HighCharts or other Canvas based graphing toolkits. Now they just

We're reaching a stage where banning somebody from all Internet access is over the top, even for crimes like this. This would prevent him from accessing online billing for utilities, banking, and many government services. Some banks are eve

No-Hiring somebody after they get one wrong answer is ridiculous. A wrong answer during an interview and how it's followed up on is one of the most telling parts of the whole process. If you want to hire people that are good at taking tests

Sounds like a great reason to introduce new hardware in the fall that takes advantage of the new device setup process and wireless syncing to iTunes/iCloud. iOS 5 is better on iPhone 5.

Really, really nice looking building and landscaping. Why keep the IL1 campus, instead of just moving everybody into a slightly larger mothership in 2015?

Sorry, but Facebook's graph describes my actual friends. Gmails with my bank and landlord are not a better representation of my contacts.

Nobody buys Macs to use as servers outside of a very small workgroup-like market, usually for creative houses. DEFINITELY nobody is picking them up as "mysql and apache servers instead of linux" because OSX is a terrible server OS and not w

The difference is context within my social network. None of my friends have Google Profiles and are unlikely to reconstruct their graph on Google Profiles. Clicking +1 doesn't have as much social distribution as the Like button because of t

Yet the bulk of advertising dollars goes to demand generation (i.e. Drink Pepsi!) and not fulfillment (i.e. searching for Pepsi on Google & seeing a targeted ad for Pepsi). Companies pay a lot to get people that don't know about their p

This isn't a response to Greenpeace, this is a response to the real costs that it takes to run compute infrastructure at the scale of Facebook, Amazon, Google, etc. If a datacenter can run at 1.07 PUE (as Facebook's new datacenter does), th

Palo Alto's utility company did the same thing while they rebuilt their bill pay site. Really frustrating as a user, especially for a city at the heart of the Valley.

Facebook's Like button can be either "Like" or "Recommend", and publishes the selected verb into news feed. Many news sites use recommend for this exact reason (NYT, for example).

A 30-minute long TV show is actually only about 21.5 minutes long. The rest is advertising. People will tolerate it if the rest of the content is relevant and engaging. If the ads are well targeted then they make people even more accepting

If you can't trust engineers to work in production, then you can't trust their code. Extensive logging, auditing, and granular access control are also critical to making this work in a large engineering org.
