I completely agree and came here to say something similar. I'm honestly perplexed by "startups" that build an app that seem to introduce no new processes or technology (a reminder about a release date? a list of movie trailers? tweet out ab

I know a lot of people who hate GWT, and it mostly boils down to GWT "abstracting away" the web (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) such that you build web applications with no regard for the web as a medium. You can't really build software for a platf

Jeez, Eric, next time please tell me what you really think :) 1) If someone retweets a link, it typically means they agree with the link or think it's important enough to share with their network. Not sure what's wrong with that assumption.

Is it really done using GWT? Of the web engineer friends I know at Google, most hate GWT and try to avoid using it whenever possible. Most Google products don't use it.

I've been using MT since 2003 and never thought it was terrible. Publishing times (full-site publishing) was always slow but publishing an entry only took a few seconds. The new Melody project forked MT and updated the UI, it looks great no

Honest question from an iPhone developer... I know many people on HN are rooting for walled gardens to fail (App Store) and for openness to triumph. Do these same people willingly use Steam and think it's great? Isn't Steam's delivery platf

Unless they can "start implementing" tens of billions of dollars sitting around to use for pre-purchasing heavily discounted parts for their devices to drive profit margins high as a kite and low as a rock for competitors, I don't think the

Seems like this is bought and paid for by Google and will be teaching an Android-centric view of mobile development. This is obviously their choice, but if they don't include any type of Objective-C and Cocoa development in their curriculum

The only part of Twitter's native apps for iOS that use a UIWebview are when rendering a single tweet since in that specific use case, it's simpler and faster to render links that way rather than deal with rendering it via Core Text. Every

Facebook is up to something really big. Awhile ago they brought on Brandon Walkin ( http://www.brandonwalkin.com/blog/ ) who is, arguably, one of the most detailed-oriented user interface designers on the planet. He's also a very talented C

My testing is done on a remote server but I keep my repo locally. Whenever I want to push it up to my server I hit a key combo in Sublime Text that I've assigned to run rsync to push files over. It usually takes about .5-1.5 seconds which,

He's a well-known figure in the indie Mac & iPhone communities and is a co-founder of Tapulous and also worked on Delicious Library for Mac. If anyone in this community could do a good job in this fight, it's Mike.

As an iOS developer, this is probably the best comparison between iOS and Android development that I've read. I'm pretty scared of Eclipse and the slow-as-hell emulator doesn't sound fun, but coding layouts that don't involve lots of "how t

The text rendering updates (it looks perfect and pixel-for-pixel the same as TextMate now) and the fullscreen mode in Lion make this an awesome upgrade for me. I can't believe how fast Jon kicks out his builds because they have huge new fea

Totally, absolutely agree. Apple's website actually forces antialiased text through that CSS rule. I wrote a userstyle to force it back to how it should look.

This is absolutely terrible for accessibility. Screen readers will not handle these buttons properly leading to a significantly more difficult experience. James Edwards actually talked about this at The Highland Fling conference a few weeks

Some really beautiful, pixel-perfect design across the site and the app. Did they do it in-house or hire an outside contractor/agency?

Both are interesting in their own right, but I think it was a little disingenuous to not announce the previous-year comparison right in the title or the first paragraph. They really buried the lede in the article.

I think mimicry exists across various mediums, but the starkness of it on the App Store is pretty intriguing. Most times there's not even a new gameplay mechanic, just new artwork and a new name.

The most interesting (and possibly neglected) piece of information that I've found when analyzing the economics & business of the App Store is just how many apps are a slightly different take on an app that was popular a few years ago.

I think the dark grey bar across the top is a big problem for a few UX & psychological reasons. First, it's mentally oppressive. The black bar at the top is like working in a room with a low ceiling painted black all day. It makes you f
