I used to hold the Economist in similar high regard in the early 2000's. In 2004 they hired a new editor-in-chief and the quality of their articles began to suffer immediately. Their perceived thoughtfulness (as a function of independenc

I don't see what the big deal is. When I go to http://apple.co.uk I see a statement about Samsung in reasonably sized, clear print: "On 25 October 2012, Apple Inc. published a statement on its UK website in relation to Samsung's Galaxy t

The link to the court rules [1] is a good start, but is not actionable unless the reader is a lawyer. You sound like a lawyer, so that may be fine for you, but most of the HN audience is comprised of non-lawyers. If you are indeed a lawye

This sounds like a great opportunity for developers to send in amicus curiae briefs to the court decrying the absurdity of software patents. Does anyone know what such a letter should look like? To what address should they be sent?

It would be more effective to have the FBI do face recognition on everyone's vacation photos on Facebook. Assuming that the kidnappers want to raise the kid as their own, they are bound to post pictures of him. This won't work for the 75

Rather than focus on any single narrow field, why not add Q&A sections. Start with one section (like "how do I play song x?") and gradually add others ("equipment tuning", "computer generated music", "business questions", "technical s

Yes...borders. Open Street Map looks like it only provides 2D building borders while Google has 3D. Google doesn't even provide an API for accessing it. Bing also only has 2D building boundary data, albeit at a slightly higher level of det

Where does the data for building shapes come from? Both Google Maps and the OP's website incorporate it. What is the format? Can I download the raw data in bulk (preferably for free) for a data mining project?

Very cool. I wish I had this when shopping for insurance a year ago. A "total annual cost" column would be helpful for making sense of the deductible/premium/co-pay relationship. Think of it as the "Price+Shipping+Tax" on shopping website
