No, sorry, but there's absolutely nothing "weird" about a windowless telephone exchange building. At one time, every single neighborhood in this country had one. This building was not created for this, it's just an old B

When launching LO Writer, one is presented with a virtual blank sheet of paper. The entire metaphor of the program is built around printing. In any case, I have virtually no Libre Office experience, and I was able to generate dizzystar's te

You could do all of above in Word version 4.0. Why isn't Libre Office designed to create a report which can be printed and bound? Seems like a basic word processing task.

The government is just expressing the will of the citizens -- primarily older people who won the property lotto and want to keep the community in a permanent 1960s time-bubble.

You're right about google programmer salaries. It's worth nothing that many different companies run bus services in SF. The busses aren't prominently labeled so the locals refer to them all as "Google Busses".

In my experience, exactly the opposite can happen and open-plan offices can discourage a lot of that cross-talk and casual discussion. The last two I've worked in had an almost library-like atmosphere. In a quiet environment, people tend to

On old Macintosh systems, JPEG files would often be labeled "JFIF file"[1]. This created some confusion which I believe contributed to people adopting the hard G pronunciation. Back during the dotcom boom, there was a joke: "We'll hire any

I've noticed that the "LinkedIn Updates" email spam tend to heavily feature a few attractive women than I worked with some time ago. I strongly suspect Linkedin is using these women's photos to bait people into clicking through to the site

There were also various java applets which more-or-less did something similar, and had the advantage of being semi-cross-platform. (Microsoft's was called "remote scripting"[1] and was pulled after they lost the Sun lawsuit.) [1] http://ww

What I'm seeing is people who already have some experience with WordPress, and are accustomed to the admin screens. Any alternative/custom CMSs are seen to be "difficult to use" when compared to WordPress.

Prior to tabbed browsing, browsers acted like 'normal' (SDI) Windows apps. The complaint about Excel is that it's an 'old-fashioned' MDI application and is missing UI widgets for easily switching between documents. (And that it's behavior i

Yeah, I used one back in school. It had a 'letter quality' mode which looked like a million bucks compared to the typical Epson monospaced dot-matrix printout. Probably subtly nudged up my GPA.

It's funny, because when I first encountered Notes way back when, it was something the department installed without IT approval. Semi-technical users could easily build little tracking and document databases and publish them on the network.
