Author of Grisu here. It's really surprising, how long it took to find the most efficient algorithms for double-conversions. In 1980 Coonen already published a good algorithm, but that one was kind-of lost. For a long time Steele &

Failed programming languages are not popular, which is why it is hard to remember them. For example, Ceylon (backed by Redhat) never got any traction, and most people forgot about it or never heard about it.

For example: - better type promotion (`if (x is! A) throw "not A"; useAsA(x);`. - Optional new/const. - Allowing named arguments at any position at the call site. These are all easier to specify and implement, and reach more

It's currently not planned for Dart 2.0. We intend to work on it at a later point again.

There are no plans to add multithreading to the platform. Currently, we are not spending resources on parallel execution (with isolates), either. There are other easier features that have more impact. Eventually, we will revisit this topic,

It's not going to be in Dart 2.0. However, it's still on the list of features we would like to work on. Adding it later gets harder (because we don't want to break our users), but we hope that we can find a good migration pat

Dart is doing fine inside Google. It is used by extremely important projects, like, for example Adwords. These teams are very happy with it and have no intention of changing. Brad Green already posted a follow-up post on the omission of Dar

I'm the author of Grisu. ( http://github.com/google/double-conversion and http://florian.loitsch.com/publications/dtoa-pldi2010.pdf ) Grisu is also proven to be always correct. As mentioned in

Author here. Grisu is accurate, but not always optimal. However, it figures out when that happens and lets you bail out to a slower algorithm when that happens. If you want full speed you should use Grisu, and then use Errol as a bailout. A

I'm not really working on Google3 (the shared code base) but I hope the following answers might still be helpful. Same repo: projects in Google are encouraged to use other project's code. You can only do that if the versions of th

Android allows JITs. On ios one has to go through precompilation or use an interpreter. The current approach for Flutter is precompilation.

I prefer not to give any numbers (not even ballpark). It is extremely dependent on the benchmark, the JS engine, execution order (which function is optimized first, and/or inlined, ...). Things get more complex if you want to implement

With the exception of numbers we should be conformant (and if we aren't please file a bug). A fully compliant dart2js would be theoretically nice, but practically mostly useless (because of its speed). The Dart language and its spec ar

This is a personal opinion, but I was honestly surprised how nicely the standardization process is going. I was part of the team that started Dart (right place at the right time :), and helped design the language. Obviously we have some emo

Disclaimer: I work on dart2js. Dart2js is not conformant. You could, maybe, twist the meaning of the spec this way, but it goes against the spirit of the sentence and the spec. Tbh we never implemented a fully compliant dart2js backend. We

In JavaScript every object is basically a hashtable. In order to get acceptable performance JS engines build type descriptions ("hidden classes" or sometimes just "maps") behind your back. That is, if you create a JS obj

Dart2js was there from the beginning and the project was always well stuffed. It was never an afterthought and some decisions in the Dart language were taken because of the constraints we have when compiling to JavaScript.

I was the TL of the libraries for almost a year, and there are good reasons we didn't go this route: - it adds overhead. Being able to write JSON.encode(customer) would mean that every class needs to retain its field names. Minificatio
