I think a good portion of it is how much you want to be distracted. I've had internet access since 95. High speed since 96ish. In that time, I've had both distracted and focused periods. Distractions don't come from the internet unless I wa

The UI is the language with which people communicate with the computer. UI patents makes as much sense as a patent on "WTF". Having such a patent is the same antisocial behavior as trying to own the "ceiling cat" meme.

In C, don't people just allocate a slab of memory for critical paths too?

I think that article might disprove it's own headline. If a single iteration of a simple simulated democracy tends to choose slightly better than average that may be all you need. A common theme among distributed systems is the parts don't

I agree but that's not a "today" solution. That's a long hard slog.

This article is rather light on how these proposals make life better for those pushing SOPA and ACTA. As it is, it's not a "today" solution since you'll have to go to war with those folks.

I think that depends very much on which large company. Where I work, getting a wiki setup on a machine I don't control would be an absolute nightmare. We're talking conference calls, forms, requirements docs, project numbers, discussions ov

It's not so much about the speed at which you think as about how quickly you can execute the changes once you've thought of them. I find it discouraging to have to fight my editor once I've thought of the change I want to make. Also debuggi

Even if you're online, the connection may have much more latency than you want to deal with. Depending on what you're doing a split second of latency can mean a lot.

I got asked 3 puzzles for my current job. It was quite annoying. One, I knew off the cuff. The other 2 were bad questions. One was caught in the "if you don't make these assumptions your wrong" trap. For the other, the "correct" answer was

Meh. It's pretty clear to me that with the mobile push low latency isn't happening. I suspect it's more likely that we'll encounter latency hiding techniques.

I think the point is more that 99% of the time websites shouldn't be doing the things Flash does well.

Won't work. In order for WebOS to avoid being the next AmigaDOS it needs to displace either iOS or Android. It's not a question of quality. It's a question of how much the market will tolerate another proprietary player.

I agree. It's going to take some time for manufacturers to pull their heads out of there asses on tablets. If you want to compete with Apple, your tablet has to be cheaper. Otherwise, why would anyone buy it? And, it has to not completely s

They don't have to be friendly to an open Internet. You just have to phrase the proposal in terms of fighting commie-ism or islamofascism.

Rather than asking why the mac is so fast, the correct question is "why the hell is dhcpcd so slow?". There's a full second before it does anything.

I wouldn't call either Haskell or Scala academic. However, here a quick shoot from the hip stereotyping of each. Scala gives me the impression it wants to be Java's C++. C++ is largely an extension of C. Sure you can use it entirely differe

While I agree that complex security decisions aren't something we should pass on to users. I think computers have hit the ubiquity point where our schools need to teach a basic safe computing course. Much like we teach sex ed.

I thinks the given vs medium relates to whether a language is image based. Forth and Lisp are image based so you could say "you're sculpting the medium". Also Lisp and Forth are more friendly towards hacking the language it self.
