In theory, the market could push Android manufacturers to offer longer support terms. In practice... not really, so, fair point.

These incentives aren't enough for any single rational actor to change their behavior. At the national level, sure, there's an argument for protectionism. But, not at the individual level as whenchamenia suggested.

I agree, but a complete solution is often out of reach. Also, many bosses aren't crazed gunmen, but they're still uncareful about how they communicate and wield their power. By being careful as a worker, you can reduce the acciden

I'm not saying that people shouldn't have the choice whether or not to sell their data - I'm saying that even if they have that choice, it doesn't prevent many society-wide harms. (Edit: Which implies that we do need to

When you're talking about 'me' or 'my data' here, do you mean 'me' as in 'scarejunba' or 'me' as in 'the hypothetical CEO of a large health insurance corporation that wants to set

Yes, you hit the nail on the head! The societal impacts have to be considered. If you rely on each person to rationally decide whether or not to sell 'their own' data, you'll have a tragedy of the commons situation. Maybe we

Well, what I'm saying is that I'm not certain that the social credit system is actually an effort to surveil and stratify all people in China. My understanding is that, in its current form, it only targets irresponsible business o

While not an expert myself, when I have looked deeper into the reporting that makes claims like this, I often find that they're speculating based on one-off statements, not describing an actual extant system. I feel like the US media,

It's certainly a dim way of looking at corporations, but, oh well. I don't think they deserve better. And I think GPL actually embodies a really positive mindset. To release GPL code is to believe that there are others out there w
