I suggest you just decide to make something small, that does not have to be released. For example: Do you use Zabbix, Nagios or anything like it? Make a website that fetches some info from another site and displays it using javascript.

I've seen a lot of people argue Derby is better than Meteor. I have so far used neither. I've briefly used Backbone before switching over to Ember after getting stuck reading Ember docs for a few hours. Considering looking at Derby instead

I really think it should not. I run ssh on the standard port, and as long as you use something like denyhosts and public key authentication, and you disable password and root login, you should be good. You could even limit the IP ranges all

Does that make me as clever as the guy that first said that? :-P I think I've probably read that somewhere before.

The plot is that electric things to not work, at all. A perfectly working generator would just stop at the time of the incident.

I actually did watch that (the newest one), but since it got canceled it's not really worth starting to watch now.

That's true! You could explain 'magic' as simply being something your current technology could not explain. If you were able to show a person from the past a mobile phone, some video or even the time machine you would need to do so.. they w

I think some crime is to be expected, people break the law when society is working, and I guess if you are already breaking the law to survive, if something happens you aren't suddenly going to change your ways. If the power is out over a l

I think I'm largely blind to such things when it comes to TV entertainment (and mostly movies). I never even thought of diesel engines not needing electricity, but that did not stop me from finding the show entertaining. I think I just natu

Well yes, I'm not saying the show is not flawed or silly. But I found it entertaining enough simply because it made me think 'what if .. ?'

It's very interesting to see how quickly things turn ugly (or at least uglier) in situations like that. With power down for two days, did they see any increase in crime beyond what you described? As it happens I was watching a TV-series yes

While this looks cool, what the obsession with making new Graphite dashboards recently? Everyone seems to be making one.

What programming language to use entirely depends on several factors: What languages to do you/the team have experience with? What are the features of the web app? Realtime stuff? Single-Page App? Lots of IO? I've lately preferred working w

I feel you would get less work done running or walking on one of these, and you would also not get much exercise value out of it. It would be better to take breaks often, and every other day take a 1 hour break to do a proper set of exercis

This looks really promising but seems very buggy here (Archlinux, node 0.8.14). First getting an error, which made me have to modify the bin/ultra-repl to even get it to launch, and then I get errors about missing modules.. I might be doing

You might be right, sorry. Tiny mobile screen and a stupid client did not let me reply until now. My screen has a decent amount of cracks so it's a bit hard to read from. :)

The article says they lost the connection, and also that it was restored a few hours later as far as I can see. I might be wrong but the title makes this out to be something they did on purpose, permanently. Which does not seem the case.
