I use SQLAlchemy to serve tens of thousands of requests per second on one of my services at Reddit. It's painful, but possible. SQLAlchemy uses the data mapper + unit of work patterns. This means that your connections and your record

I have a non-striver on my team of strivers. He is quite valued, because he's: - always fun to be around (a consequence of not being overloaded) - the guy to say "the emperor has no clothes" (having time to look around does

I've often thought that on my next startup, I should just start it in Cabo San Lucas. Package on-site interviews with a weekend trip. Pay middle-America salaries. Work hard, beach often.

I ran a bootstrapped company with $150k/mo of well-documented, above-board recurring revenue and Chase wouldn't give it a credit limit above $5k. Entrusting my finances to another startup like Brex is scary, but damn is the pitch

ASGs + Zookeeper is really easy, but you have to use https://github.com/soabase/exhibitor . It coordinates replacing downed ZK nodes using S3, and also provides a bunch of extra management tools. I had a single Zooke

As a cyclist, I can't wait for self-driving cars. I'll take a small chance of being accidentally killed as a systemic, correctable mistake over the small chance of being killed by the 5% of people who are consistently impatient, i

I've found it easer to do some traffic-shaping with (i.e. queue up more than N connections per ip). The status page/dashboard is really nice. The English docs are better. This might have changed in the last three years

This is almost exactly the specification of offshore workers. I pay anywhere from $5/hr-$100/hr, depending on skillset. I'm not sure if this gets you a modest quality of life where you live.

I think it's less about the working style and more about the promise of working in the future(tm). When Rails 0.9 dropped in 2004, I instantly rewrote my old PHP app in it and never looked back. It just felt so expressive and naturall

1.5 million videos uploaded implies the involvement of at least persistent script-kiddies, if not possibly state-level actors getting involved for propaganda. This seems likely to be an arms race.

If any VC could have bought $TWTR at a $280MM cap in 2010 they would have. Only employees got that deal. Twitter was already a unicorn, but the internal paperwork hadn't caught up yet. It's arbitrage, not clairvoyance.
