Think about Gödel numbering or Cantor diagonalization. Let's assume discrete, rectangular representations of images (width, height in pixels and colorspace of #000000-#FFFFFF). Here's an injective mapping from natural numbers (the indices

There's a couple of these already in progress, but you usually have to get introduced to them via your network. Ask around :)

Don't have anything to relate about the truth of the rumor, but my dad is a family doctor who has been begging for a clever tablet for medical forms for about five years now. The two key wins for him are (1) not having to fetch and replace

At a conference, Norvig once mentioned that you not clicking on the number 1 link says a lot more than you clicking on the number 4 link. Just saying.

I'm happy to downvote every comment someone makes in an out-of-order thread exchange. I'm not going to look for your comments elsewhere, but if two people get in an argument 6 levels deep, that's going to be 6 downvotes.

This is a really great article for today's design trends. It provides the sort of knowledge that would really help a mediocre designer (i.e. multitasking founder) jump up a level. I wonder tho. These principles were presented as universal

FYI, be careful about using Rinda. It's quite inefficient. O(n) inserts, etc.

I like everything they're doing; I just don't trust their capability to win enough market share to make developing on their platform meaningful. Plus, I don't own one so I wouldn't dogfood.

That's the killer for me. I wish projects that release version 0.17.2 would just get on with it and give us a 1.0. Actually, I guess I'd be happy if the constraint was simply "don't break shit in a patch release, even if you're 0.x".

What's interesting about this to me is that when combined with the currently free inbound bandwidth, you could have a pretty damn cheap crawler.

The pricing has to be cyclical on a daily/weekly basis, right? Plus, the algorithm could be opportunistic and take advantage of temporary dips in price/utilization.

From the wikipedia article on Paul Erdős: His colleague Alfréd Rényi said, "a mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems", and Erdős drank copious quantities. (This quotation is often attributed incorrectly to Erdős himself

You store a normal AMI on S3, which is $.15/GB. If you care about costs, you should be doing all of your high IO tasks on the /mnt swap drive, so your IO costs should be pretty low. It's probably a wash.
