It's probably better to specialize in business verticals than tech choices, and better to choose something that doesn't have so many kids learning it to build games. YMMV

Scala is rough IMO less because of the expressiveness, but more because you have at least 4 paradigms in common use, none of which play well with each other. Let's see, I count (1) Futures/Async (2) Threaded (3) Akka/Play&#x

Having been on both sides of the situation a couple times, the distinction is pretty simple for me: do you have a seat on the board? If you have a board seat, great, you're a real founder/CTO! If you're not interested in the

I haven't pinned down the research yet, but I've read in popsci mentions and arxiv abstracts that at least a couple other people have cited, that training neural nets would be accelerated by a full-scale (i.e. mega-qubit) quantu

FWIW, a few years back, I was averaging <5ms for a benchmark of live traffic (many thousands of queries per second) on Pinterest queries against their full dataset on a single EC2 box with a weeks worth of customization on top of Lucene.

SOAP is a shitty implementation of a perfectly good idea. GRPC, for example, is a vast improvement over JSON+REST. YMMV with Swagger, as I've never tried it.

This is one reason I'm hopeful for a not-killer-robots future. I think there's a chance strong AI will have to evolve over a non-trivial amount of time (as opposed to an afternoon's super-singularity), and a strong evolution

Have you seen how many silly versions of bicycles and airplanes we got in the early 1900s? Suicide doors on cars and funny little wings on the back? Things take a while to converge.

Thrift is comparable to GRPC, and more user-friendly in practice than GRPC. GRPC is more flexible, rigorous (anal). I disagree that Thrift failed, but GRPC has more momentum right now IMO. Source (GRPC at current startup, multiple years of

See GRPC for a common alternative to HTTP. Kafka and Kinesis are common event buses. But message queues are usually an added complexity for realtime inter-service messaging.

As someone who has run multi-terabyte Lucene-based installs, managing gigabytes isn't that interesting ;) It's competing with a project with hundreds of committers, an amazing ecosystem, tons of diverse users, etc.

There was some stuff in search at one point that stored the length of a tweet in a byte. Making DMs longer was a database limitation at one point. Today though, I wouldn't expect it.
