Yes it’s much worse. With Wikipedia we all see the same output and can review it together.

Presumably this is intended to lead into an argument that because we disagree on exactly where the limit should be we shouldn’t have a limit at all. We could make the same case against drunk driving, speed limits, age of consent laws, maxim

If we’re assuming an IDE that can arbitrarily change text layout and rendering I don’t see why it matters where the comment goes

Annoyingly it pushes the type definitions away from the function body when you have a particularly long doc. It’s a cute trick but docs above would have been better.

Traditional languages will not remove the features that make them poor for configuration. I can’t imagine Python dropping the ability to query the current date, for example.

Efficiency is not resilient. Supply chains were efficient before Covid and look what happened. Efficiency is a non-goal for government. I’m surprised that DOGE engineers (who presumably have deployed a load balancer or two) don’t understand

Since you are not terribly overweight you could reach a healthy weight with relatively minor lifestyle and diet adjustments. Isn’t this preferable to the side effects (some probably unknown) involved in these drugs? Genuine question.

Jane Street leadership have said that programming languages matter. I think they just really believe in FP.

It’s true - people were saying that Poetry solves these problems for ages. Maybe uv does? I’ll wait and see.

Fascinating. I think Meta is a big winner from this - they still control the content and now mining it for value has been proven even cheaper by DeepSeek.

Whitespace works better in the context of statically typed functional programming, I’ll give you that!

It’s quicker to move code around with whitespace because you can just tab it in and out, move lines etc. The best solution is to ban tabs entirely from the syntax - only allow spaces in multiples of 2.

In other languages we can do a poor man’s IO with a function like: () => console.log(“abc”) Is this really so different from IO everywhere in Haskell?

Seems like this works best for small pure functions in a strongly typed language. Is pure core / imperative shell more LLM friendly?

Even better would be if you could specify the dependencies inside of the script. Edit: might be possible now? https://simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/19/one-shot-python-tools/
