Please follow the thread of the conversion. I'm talking about how to mitigate the page reflow issues that the posted article is talking about when lazy loading images and other resources.

Yes, by "placeholder" I mean the IMG element that loads with an initial low-res/default "src" attribute. Then the actual, higher-bandwidth image will load by updating the "src" attribute.

But blank and pixellated images that get filled out later are what I'd recommend. The alternative is looking at a blank screen while your browser makes upfront HTTP requests for images, which can delay render-blocking resources like a

Yes but the resolution of those "some images" depends on what kind of connection/device you're on. It's not adequate to say 'just send the lowest bandwidth experience', because then every desktop browser o

Lazy-loading (the practice being somewhat criticized here) is actually halfway to that goal. The BBC (cited in this article) also uses a technique they call 'cutting the mustard', which checks which features are available on the b

I used to write quick blog posts some years ago, and post on social media often, but I never wrote something I considered a professional article because of hesitations like you're expressing: it needs to be 'uniquely insightful&#x

Yeah, maybe they're taking off in India and China because of a "leapfrog" opportunity. For example, pre-paid digital wallets are used to pay for ride-sharing, whereas in the U.S people just use the same card that they already

I find these products like Apple Pay and Android Pay to be too old-school, doubling down on the dependence on banks and credit cards. They need to go ahead and load funds into the app like a digital wallet. Two links about this (first link

Good article. Podcasts still have a 'Web 2.0', pre-Facebook ethos: there's a feed, and there are software clients that check the feed and get a direct link to the mp3 file. Personally, I want to make a site that archives podc

I'm not disputing the architectural choices behind Node's async model. I'm talking about syntax. It's cool that you can process multiple promises at the same time, but most of the time I need one promise to complete befo

So in PHP, you would go (I haven't tested these snippets, just writing them out here): $username = get_username(); echo "Hi, ".$username; do_other_things(); In Node, using promises, you have to write: get_usern

I've been on a similar learning curve with Node over the last year, and it has certainly been a rougher incline than other languages I've used. The whole async situation needs to settle down, it's completely unacceptable to w

One of the most aesthetically "future proof" movies is probably 2001: A Space Odyssey. Compare Star Wars, released almost a decade later, and how the Stormtrooper armor looks dated (at least to me): http://i.imgur.com&#

The other similarity across the industries you mention is that people want to participate in them for 'passion', in a way they wouldn't participate in, say, accounting.

Interesting. I definitely want to experiment with something like that. Most examples I've seen of a WP theme in React (e.g. https://github.com/Automattic/Picard ) use the new WP API and a node.js app. So there are

I suppose it depends on how complicated the logic is behind your conditional HTML. If there is an initial JS payload that checks the screen size, I might still try to get an HTML string back from the server after checking the size. But ther

Ideally there should be a way to render JavaScript on the server side for views/templates, like React, without having to write your whole backend in JS. In fact I just googled and found something like this in the reactjs commmunity rep

Google has been saying that for years, but I don’t really believe it… 1) First there were the "hashbang" URLs, that Google said they'd crawl fine, but that did affect Gawker's SEO: http://www.webmonkey.com
