Wouldn't it be a shame if your shop got broken into, looted and set on fire? Is the above sentence a threat? Of course it is. Not literally (I did not directly say that I would send thugs to loot your shop if you refused to pay me prote

There's a simple explanation - the authorities' main priority is to prevent copycat attacks . The most embarassing thisg possible for TSA would be an exact repeat of 9/11 - same weapons (wasn't it box cutters?) etc. So that's what they ta

From the article: > The speedy Cheetah robot can lope along at a brisk 18mph, making it a record breaker when it comes to robots I was slightly shocked to read that. Is that really the fastest legged robot? (I couldn't see any refer

The same technique for dividing by 9 in base 10, also works for dividing by 255 in base 256, so you can quickly calculate N % 255 by adding the bytes of N together. Useful for algorithms like this: http://stackoverflow.com/q/295579/12048

I have only twice thought one of my problems was due to a compiler bug, and I was right one of those times (and that was because my company was stuck with a 4-year old version of the compiler; The bug had already been fixed in the latest

There's an older trick that still works for me: a passphrase in the subject line. You can even include the passphrase in the mailto: uri. E-mail harvesters usually discard it, but a user who clicks the link (e.g. to compose a message in Th

Interesting - that means if I manufacture & package my own pills, with my own logo, but print "contains Sildenafil" on the box when it doesn't, that does not qualify as counterfeiting?

I would be interested to know if the author approves or disapproves of buying used CDs and DVDs I remember some bloggers recommending it around the time the DMCA was introduced. (The idea being that MPAA/RIAA cannot make money from it but

Probably not quite what the designers intended, but... I plan to put one in an aluminium box with some SRAM and an anti-tamper switch, store keys in the SRAM and use it to back up TrueCrypted thumb drives. Should be more secure than mountin

According to the blog at raspberrypi.org (currently offline) they are limiting orders to 1 per customer. So it will be interesting to see if this order goes through.

I think you would have to already have an account with one of the distributors to stand a chance. It's hard enough to get one page to load, but I would guess registering and placing an order would involve at least 5 clicks.

Was it possible to initialise a local array with literals like that (e.g. Q5) in C89? If not then the version of C in the examples (assuming it is consistent) must be at least C99, which suggests that sizeof(int)==2 is due to the target

Edit : I was wrong - see cygx's reply --- I'm a bit rusty on the C spec, but I think the author is wrong about #4. The answer refers to an exception for a pointer that points one past the end of an array. And &a[5] would be valid based

I disagree with the bit about test-driven development. It is not necessary to add tests specifically for type errors. Unit tests for basic functionality will usually catch them.

I'm in the UK. Until a few years ago I didn't really mind ads - I would happily sit through them until my show came back. Then in mid-2009 gocompare.com launched their ad campaign (with Wynne Evans singing.) They pushed it really hard - it
