Yes, I've been throttled many times by S3. My largest database is ingesting ~5PB/day and that turns into a lot of files in S3. At one point we changed our S3 key scheme to not have hashes up front, which unlocked some simplicity

This has happened to me so many times. Especially in the distributed database I work on ... "hmm maybe I need to let the experiment run for longer, this data is noisy so it probably needs more time to show a trend line".

What's weird is my pediatrician here in Seattle uses kg for my ~10 year old kids' weights but inches for their heights. Why the kg? They always translate to pounds for discussion, but the record is in kg. It was always pounds an

Definitely don't read the most recent one, Translation Space. It's some very bad "I like you but I don't know how to say it!" YA-vein tropes and the climactic scene is, essentially, people walking around a circular

Zappos founder Tony Hsieh was addicted to nitrous. It sounded real bad! He ended up dying in a house fire while locked in a basement, in a situation that had "bizarre suicide" written all over it. I've certainly enjoyed a huf

I don't disagree about any of this, but it's also true that pill mills were a very real part of the early trajectory of the opioid crisis.

love the writing in this "In physics, there's a word for 14 orders of magnitude of attenuation. It's called zero, i.e., you will measure nothing." Lots of great sentences in here as noted in the other comments.

I'm glad you couldn't tell! It's basically tongue in cheek, as the question is silly to begin with. And of course eggs predate chicken, eggs are seriously old technology. Back to the tongue in cheek: there is something easily

Also I think by definition a chicken is a bird that hatches from an egg (among other defining characteristics). So th egg must have come first, as a chicken-like creature that didn't come from an egg wouldn't be a chicken.

I welcome the day when the US stops devoting enormous amounts of useful real estate to bank branches. They are a sad simulacrum of actual street life, taking up tons of space to advertise a bank and contributing to high rents that preclude

From my own adventures in colocation, i came to conclude that data centers are Narnia, in the worst possible way: you enter to perform what feels like 30 minutes worth of work, and somehow 8 hours pass before you see the outside world again
