Why is a local domain useful? I mean, what's wrong with your local machines having only a hostname with no domain at all?

You know, candidate/preview releases have been available for some time, if you can't wait to test these new features: https://jdk.java.net/14/

Ok. We know you know a lot about the "Castillian Spanish" language. And maybe about a ton of other things. But it seems kind of pointless, given the note was already translated by the Spanish Guardia Civil, don't you think?

I used to enjoy reading Larry McVoy's comments here, https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=luckydude Unfortunately, he hasn't written any comment here for more than a year.

It's the same effort it takes to run Linux in virtualization to test your software on it yet nobody does.

Well, it's not my fault that I can't use Edge on my operating system of choice. It's not "YOU don't test your work in Egde" but "YOU don't test your work in Edge but you wouldn't be able to"

Of course, they're a for profit company. And I understand they will do everything they can to undermine competition. That's why I also don't buy this "new cool Microsoft" mantra.

Why should they fork an open, actively maintained project like OpenJDK? It would only create incompatibilities between them.

Lol, I wish I could keep getting my _Oracle_ JDK updated from the package manager. Unfortunately that stopped being a thing after Java6 with some licensing changes that made it impossible for distributions to package Java (if I recall corre

But why all the effort needed when you can simply use the open-source Java version called OpenJDK? It's virtually identical to Oracle's JDK, only without commercial support, and it's licensed the same way those other alternat

For me, it's even crazier to rely on a third party provider to be able to do my work. I wouldn't be comfortable at all knowing that my development infrastructure is beyond my control.

We all ditched the Unix model of a central server with dumb terminals around because Microsoft told us the future was everybody having a full OS in their workstation. Now they tell us the future is going back 30 years, and having all of our

Well, at least this new IE is open-source, cross-platform, and way better than that browser which reached a 90% usage peak some time ago. Joking aside, I've never really known the difference between Google Talk, Hangouts, etc, but I re

I used to do -and still do- a lot of work with AVRs for hobby projects. I find them an awesome piece of technology, allowing you to start working on something with only a breadboard and a couple of wires, in contrast with ARM based ucs wher

You can (try) to restrict your browsing to HTTPS sites only. But it's very difficult to ensure that all the communications your device is making (background services, vendor apps...) go through that channel.

No, you're wrong. You can compare Mono to GNU Classpath (1998) and the like. But OpenJDK was backed by Sun. They started releasing the source code in 2007. So it's 10 years ago. You can read it all here: https://en.wiki
